Another snippet from our latest report "Beyond the Hype," https://lnkd.in/ehrVZeCw. There is a concerning lack of formal AI guidance in our educational institutions. Our benchmarking data reveals that only 30% of institutions have an AI policy or strategy in place. We are not the first to highlight this strategic gap. For example: The DfE's recent reports highlight the urgent need for clear policies and ethical guidelines Our findings manifest several critical gaps: Strategic Planning - Most institutions lack formal AI guidance - Few have clear frameworks for AI implementation - Limited strategic planning for ethical considerations - Absence of structured approach to AI tool selection Policy Impact - Institutions with AI policies show: - Better support for students (correlation 0.28) - Greater awareness of AI biases (correlation 0.28) - Higher parental awareness of AI use (correlation 0.27) - More systematic approach to AI integration - Implementation Challenges - Lack of formal evaluation processes - Inconsistent approaches to AI adoption - Limited risk assessment frameworks - Fragmented decision-making processes Why This Matters: Students across education are actively engaging with AI tools, both inside and outside the classroom. Without clear policies and strategies, institutions are struggling to provide consistent, safe guidance for AI use. This policy vacuum means some students are navigating complex AI tools without proper institutional support or safeguards. Action Needed: - Development of comprehensive AI policies - Clear frameworks for ethical AI use - Structured approaches to AI tool selection - Strategic guidance for safe implementation - Regular policy review and updates We must act now to establish robust AI policies because every student deserves a safe, well-structured approach to AI integration in their education. For example: Safety & Security Measures - Independent schools are significantly ahead in implementing AI safeguards - They show greater awareness of potential AI bias - Higher scores in data protection awareness and implementation - More robust frameworks for student safety when using AI tools Strategic Implementation - Independent schools demonstrate clearer educational goals - Better developed impact assessments for AI use More structured approaches to AI piloting - Stronger overall strategic planning for AI integration Practical Application - Independent schools show higher confidence in classroom AI use - More systematic approach to tool selection and implementation - Better developed support systems for teachers - More comprehensive professional development programmes Why This Matters: Students across education are actively engaging with AI tools, both inside and outside the classroom. This disparity in institutional readiness means some students are receiving structured, safe guidance in AI use whilst others are left to navigate this complex technology largely unsupported. For education to be equitable, we must ensure all schools can empower their students to use AI safely and effectively in ways that enhance - not diminish - their precious human intelligence. This requires immediate attention to close the gap between independent and state school provision. Urgent Action Needed: - Targeted funding and support professional development programmes accessible to all schools - Shared resources and best practices - Strategic guidance for safe and effective AI integration The message is clear: we must act now because every student deserves equal opportunity to develop the skills needed for an AI-enabled future. Director of Education at HMC (The Heads' Conference) Conference, Kate Howell: "This research shows that while many are aware of AI and its benefits, a small proportion are confident and comfortable using it and even fewer have policies in place in their school to improve those low confidence levels.   We can learn a lot from countries like Estonia, Finland and Singapore, who have made great strides from a strategic and AI implementation point of view.   Government needs to invest in supporting schools to make the most of AI. There is a risk that without effective focus, AI will only serve to exacerbate existing educational inequalities."
