Excited to have participated in the WA Chinese Chamber Of Commerce Business Forum today opened by Hon Dr Tony Buti MLA, Minister for Education, where I had the privilege of delivering the keynote on “The Role of International Education in Fuelling WA’s Energy Transition” and joining a dynamic panel discussion with Rustico Dulguime (IDP Education, Australia, New Zealand and Asia) Derryn Belford (CEO, StudyPerth, Western Australia) expertly moderated by Prof Stephen Choo, PhD, GAICD It was a very insightful discussion celebrating WA! So how Western Australia is perfectly positioned to lead the world in the energy transition: ✅ Critical Minerals Hub: WA is one of the few places on Earth where nearly the entire periodic table of critical minerals is found. This makes WA a powerhouse for producing materials essential for clean energy technologies. ✅ Natural Advantages: With abundant sun and wind year-round, WA is the ideal place to make renewable energy a reality. 🔆 “WA IS WHERE ENERGY IS” This unique combination of resources and renewable potential gives WA an unmatched opportunity to become the green energy superpower of the future. Key Challenges and Takeaways from the session: 1️⃣ Awareness Gap: There’s a need to increase understanding of the role international education plays in supporting WA’s energy goals. 2️⃣ Academic Supply Challenges: Australia’s capacity to deliver graduates in high-demand fields is limited, requiring strategic growth in relevant programs. 3️⃣ Demand-Supply Mismatch: WA’s industries are growing, but there’s a need to align education pathways with these demands. 4️⃣ Policy Alignment: Government policies must better support the rapid integration of international students into critical fields like green hydrogen, decarbonisation technologies, and engineering innovation. Where to from here? ✅ A unified approach to align education, energy, and #workforce development. ✅ Policies that attract and retain global talent in WA. ✅ Industry-academia-government partnerships to create robust opportunities for international graduates. 💡 WA’s future as a global clean energy leader is within reach—but collaboration is key. From Diversify WA to our 10 Year Science and Technology plan WA is leading the way to become the Western #GATEWAY and the global hub for education, energy, and innovation. #InternationalEducation #EnergyTransition #StudyPerth #WACCC #GlobalTalent #RenewableEnergy #CriticalMinerals Peter Klinken The University of Western Australia Government of Western Australia Hon Dr Tony Buti MLA
