I have noticed a significant amount of discussion on LinkedIn regarding team-driven commercial real estate brokerages. As an experienced professional in the field, I would like to offer my insights on this matter. (I would be interested in the opinions of others on the matter as well.) My Story: In my previous role, I was part of a sizable team. While the collective experience, knowledge, and potential for increased fee generation initially seemed advantageous, The team has a proven track record of successfully completing numerous multi-million dollar transactions, establishing their position as a prominent market leader. This impressive history was a key factor in my decision to join the team. 🏆💰🤝 I was able to quickly establish myself in the real estate industry and achieve significant success in a short period of time. Despite being new to cold calling, I demonstrated a natural ability to connect with property owners. Within a year, I secured my first listing and subsequently closed two deals, generating a substantial amount of revenue in commissions. 🎉💰 But I soon began to question the rationale behind my decision to join. 🤔 In my second year, my performance significantly improved, resulting in a substantial increase in revenue, double that of the previous year. 🎉💰 However, this success only exacerbated my dissatisfaction with the inequitable agreement I had entered into. 😤⚖️ I approached my team members once more, seeking a more just and balanced distribution of the rewards. 🤝💸 Regrettably, my request was again deferred and ultimately rejected. 😞👎 Fortunately, my tenure there was brief. We mutually agreed that my skills would be better utilized in a different environment. This year has been my most successful in the industry to date. I have almost matched last year's revenue while exponentially growing my net income. 💰📈 I don't know if this makes me anti-team or just more aware of my worth. But either way if something doesn't feel right you have to do something about it. If I never spoke up my path wouldn't have changed and I would be continuing to make others good 😊 fee 😊 on my efforts. The Lord has taught me many lessons, especially when it comes to TRUST. "I will never be in commercial real estate." That's what I told my dad after he had me knee-deep in leases and property management as a kid. Funny how life takes a turn, right? After grad school, craving something more entrepreneurial, guess what? I became the very thing I vowed to avoid - a commercial real estate broker! My early days in the industry were a whirlwind. ”Should I stay or should I go?“ As December rolls in, many agents reflect on their year and contemplate their next move. For me, joining Real Broker was a surprisingly quick and straightforward decision—one that might surprise some! Having switched brokerages several times, I know firsthand how stressful, costly, and emotionally charged this process can be. Yet, I’ve loved every team I’ve been a part of because they were exactly what I needed at that moment in my personal and professional journey. With almost 22 years in the industry and experience at 11 different brokerages (yes, you read that right!), I’ve seen it all—from solo agents to mega teams, local boutiques to international luxury brands. Choosing a brokerage is a lot like picking a car; they all get you from point A to B but offer different features. I’ve always selected brokerages based on where I could thrive and best serve my clients. When I first moved to Toronto, I didn’t have connections or a familiar name, so I sought out brokerages with impressive brands. As I grew and evolved, I found I needed that branding less and less. I realized I was spending hundreds of thousands a year without gaining significant value. It was time for a change! For my team and me, a cloud-based model works wonders. I may be Gen-X, but I’ve found the tech easy to navigate, and the support from management has been incredible. Some might ask, “Don’t you need to recruit?” The truth is, every brokerage encourages attracting agents. I’m a REALTOR first and foremost, focused on my clients. If I’m happy and thriving, why wouldn’t I want my realtor friends to experience the same? Change leads to growth, and I’m excited about where this journey is taking me.
