Re-discovering who your buyer is can be essential for B2B tech companies. Most tech companies are focused on users, which is fine when the’re a B2C business, but Sjol works with many B2B businesses whose buyers aren’t necessarily also the users. It's odd the milestone moments you remember in a growing business. Some are obviously meaningful: a landmark customer, revenue breakthroughs, funding rounds, key team members joining... Others are much less obvious, like ordering your first merch or attending your first event as an exhibitor - but they stick with you anyway! So huge thanks to Joshua Smith, Tamara McMillen & CRO Connected for sharing this particular milestone with me and RevvedUp. It was a privilege to be amongst great vendors like Gerry Hill 🚀 from ConnectAndSell, Inc, Aurelien Mottier from memoryBlue and Tom Happé Trueleads. And wonderful to meet so many new faces and reconnect with old friends. One key theme that cropped up through the sessions is that GTM models have to change, particularly when it comes to new customer acquisition... 97% of buyers are not in market at any given time, so throwing more and more undifferentiated scale at the 3% who are in market, is a recipe for disaster. Its a surefire way to burn through your TAM (and erode your brand). But no one is quite sure how to change, and what the alternative is. You may be a multi-billion dollar Unicorn with a super subscribed IPO, but if your customers are hitching your products to donkeys and disgruntled users burning down your showroom, you’re doing something very wrong! Ah, the fine art of self-destruction! Nothing screams 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 like releasing a product that breaks after two uses and then offering customer service that could double as a crash course in how to alienate your customers. There’s something truly magical about spending hours on hold, only to be told, 'We can’t help you, but we value your feedback 😡 😡 Delivering bad products and poor customer service can have a significant negative impact on a company's brand value. When customers receive faulty or subpar products, it undermines their trust and confidence in the brand. This can lead to increased returns, complaints, and ultimately, customer dissatisfaction. Over time, word-of-mouth spreads, especially with the rise of social media, where negative reviews and experiences can quickly go viral. Poor customer service compounds the issue. When customers feel their concerns are not addressed or they are treated poorly, it creates a sense of neglect. Loyal customers may switch to competitors, and potential customers may be dissuaded from engaging with the brand altogether. Ultimately, bad products and poor customer service erode a company's reputation, diminishing its brand value and positioning in the market.
