In his 2024 message for International Women’s Day, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres appeals for sustained financing to “support women’s organizations on the front line,” and for programs to end violence against women and “drive women’s inclusion and leadership in economies, digital technologies, peace-building and climate action.” The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), a regional umbrella environmental fund, is implementing the Caribbean Organization for a Resilient Environment (CORE) Project which aims to increase resilience to climate change of vulnerable groups in 8 Caribbean countries. More specifically, these project beneficiaries include Conservation Trust Funds, Women’s Rights Organizations, Environmental Organizations and Youth Organizations from the region. Investing in women and championing gender equality turbocharges a future where everyone in society can thrive, creating a world of boundless opportunity and empowerment for all. As the CBF joins in supporting International Women’s Day 2024, learn more about the how the CORE Project can support the regional push for gender inclusivity in the Caribbean: https://lnkd.in/eTxwHqy5 #internationalwomensday2024 #womensday #climateresilience #climatechange #sustainabledevelopment #CaribbeanConservation

Excited to share insights from my first panel on Energy Access in Fragile Contexts at the IGAD Pavilion during #COP29. It was an honor to spotlight the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) experience and highlight a project close to my heart –Spring of the ASAL Enkang’ Model for Gender Equality & Climate Resilience. This initiative promotes access to sustainable and clean energy in marginalized areas, using observational learning to shift mindsets and perceptions. Key Takeaways: 1. Energy Priorities for Africa: Are we prioritizing access first, or focusing on transitioning? And if it’s the latter, what are we transitioning from? 2. Sustainability Challenges: With many African communities heavily dependent on donor and NGO support, how can we foster self-reliance and sustainable growth? Conclusion: Africa holds immense energy potential, yet access remains a major hurdle, compounded by poor governance. These conversations are crucial as we push for actionable climate solutions. #ClimateChange #UNFCCC #COP29 #EnergyAccess #ClimateActionNow

We are women leading restoration and climate change initiatives in Kenya’s coastal region, working through Fridays for Future Mombasa under FFFKE to raise awareness and advocate for climate-friendly policies. This year, our 3 grassroots organizations – Wild Heart Kenya, Blue Earth Organization, and Mazingira Pamoja – have united to ensure that Indigenous and grassroots women, spanning across generations, can actively participate in global decision-making spaces. Historically, these spaces have lacked the representation of grassroots & Indigenous voices, leading to policies that overlook the needs of our communities. We are organizing a delegation of 5 Indigenous & grassroots women to attend the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) in Cali, Colombia. At COP16, our delegation will advocate for the recognition of the link between biodiversity conservation, climate action, and gender equality. This event is critical for learning, influencing policy, and ensuring that the women leading restoration work at home are part of these global discussions. We are seeking support to fund this delegation and enable these women to bring their unique perspectives to the global stage. In 2015, all UN Member States agreed on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 🌏 This plan includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) that serve as a roadmap and universal call to action to eradicate poverty, safeguard the planet, and ensure that all people experience peace and prosperity by 2030. The efforts in our Marine Protected Areas align with the United Nations Development Programme’s SDGs, including: 🌊 Life below water (SDG 14) 🌱 Climate action (SDG 13 ) 💵 No poverty (SDG 1) 📈 Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) ♀️ ♂️ Gender equality (SDG 5) 🤝 Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) The 17 SDGs are interconnected, acknowledging that progress in one area influences outcomes in others, and emphasising that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. GENDER INCLUSIVITY 🌷 Globally, women and girls in all their diversity, and particularly those from Indigenous Peoples and local communities, rely on healthy ecosystems and play vital roles in the management and conservation of biodiversity, drawing on gender-specific ecological knowledge. 🌷 The strengthening women’s capacities so they can effectively participate in high-level discussions is critical. This was highlighted at a side-event to COP16 aimed at identifying effective approaches for gender-responsive implementation of the GBF. 🌷 Gender equality and the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are strongly interconnected, and efforts to achieve gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment are critical for ensuring the effective implementation of the GBF. 🌷 To support and promote the gender-responsive implementation of the GBF, Parties adopted the Gender Plan of Action 2022–2030 at CBD COP15. However, data deficiency and limited capacity and resources plague its implementation. 🌷 Enabling the meaningful and effective participation of women’s organisations requires providing them with the resources, logistical support, information, training, and decision-making authority to influence biodiversity policy and practice. 🌷 Disappointingly, South Africa made no commitments in terms of its national targets for achieving Target 23 ahead of COP16. #biodiversity #COP16 #genderinclusive

Today's #COP16 session on The Great Blue Wall was a powerful reminder of Africa's leadership in inclusive ocean conservation. Key points: ✅ Aim to protect 30% of the Western Indian Ocean by 2030 ✅ Focus on community-led conservation with women in leadership roles ✅ Commitment to a gender-responsive sustainable blue economy ✅ Need for increased international support and funding for inclusive initiatives ReSea, as a joint initiative of Mission inclusion and IUCN, supported by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, is proud to contribute to this visionary initiative. Together, we're turning the tide on climate change and biodiversity loss while promoting gender equality. #GreatBlueWall #OceanConservation #BlueEconomy #GenderEquality >> IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa, IUCN Climate Team

Today, we celebrate the International Day of Rural Women, recognizing their vital role in global food systems, building climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, and caring for land towards gender equality. Empowering rural women is crucial for human, social, economic, and institutional development, especially in the face of climate change. As we gear up for #COP16 in #Colombia, let's honor the women in rural areas. FUPAD COLOMBIA's projects have been instrumental in supporting rural women as farmers, small producers, environmental custodians, and defenders of human rights. We have also provided humanitarian assistance to rural women affected by internal displacement. Their voices and participation are pivotal in creating safer communities, as rural women are usually the core group in establishing and supporting self-protection mechanisms. Stay tuned during #COP16 to learn more about these remarkable women and their impact on their communities. #Biodiversity #GenderEquality #RuralSecurity #SustainableAgriculture
