#LatePost On 7th June I completed 20 years in the Sector. ♥️ This journey has been incredible, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who has been a part of it. Here’s to many more years of making a difference together! A Small Town Girl Sees the World. Twenty years ago, in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, I embarked on a journey that would take me across the globe, responding to crises and advocating for climate action. Today, I am thrilled to mark two decades in the humanitarian sector, reflecting on a path filled with challenges, growth, and profound impact. From the outset, as a seasoned humanitarian professional and climate advocate, I have had the honor of managing 10 emergency operations since 2004. Each of these experiences has been a testament to the resilience of communities and the power of collective action. My focus has always been on orchestrating immediate relief efforts, facilitating transition responses, and spearheading long-term rehabilitation initiatives, with a particular emphasis on Water, Sanitation, Environment Sanitation, and Hygiene Promotion. In more recent times, I found myself at the forefront of national-level emergency coordination efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises. Supporting state Inter-Agency Groups and networks was crucial to ensuring efficient and effective responses during these challenging times. The co-founding of the Climate Action Resource Network – Asia Pacific (CARN-AP) and the WICCI Gujarat CSR Council stands as a testament to my unwavering commitment to addressing pressing social and environmental issues. Being recognized through awards such as the 9th Udgam Women Achievers of Gujarat Award 2018 has been a humbling acknowledgment of this journey. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my career has been training over 12,000 individuals, including local communities, government personnel, outreach workers, and NGO staff. Advocacy for sustainable practices and resilience building has always been close to my heart. Kishan Reddy on X, and appreciated by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji. As the Nodal Officer for Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, I closely coordinated with various ministries and bureaucrats to steer my organization’s efforts. This two-week campaign culminated in a powerful message of sustainability, with Hon'ble Ministers Shri Nitin Gadkari (Minister of Road Transport & Highways), Shri G. Kishan Reddy (Minister of Coal & Mines), and Shri P.M. Prasad (Chairman, Coal India Limited) planting saplings under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative, a symbolic gesture honouring Mother Earth through environmental stewardship. Over the course of the campaign, 129 programs were conducted, directly engaging 15,000 participants. These included health camps and welfare initiatives that provided critical support to sanitation workers. Leading a team of 200+ professionals, I was tasked with coordinating large-scale social programs, and ensuring efficient collaboration across departments. This required leveraging key management skills like stakeholder engagement, program oversight, and fostering cross-functional communication to drive long-lasting impact. What makes this moment even more special is the recognition from ministers and senior government bureaucrats of Project TARASH (Super 30 of Maharashtra), a CSR initiative that I am proud to contribute to alongside a dedicated team. This year we want to recognise our colleague, Anita Sharma who works for our partner organisation, the Centre for Business and Entrepreneurial Development (CBED) overseeing our community-based springshed management programme in Uttarakhand, India. Anita said: “Himalayan communities rely on springs, but many have dried up due to climate change and land-use patterns. Steep slopes intensify rainwater runoff, yet it’s possible to recharge these springs with technical, social, and vegetative interventions. Revitalising dried-up springs can provide perennial water sources, alleviating severe water scarcity in remote areas during summers. This project not only reduces the burden of water collection for women but also empowers them to build climate resilience. When it is about environment sustainability, every effort to conserve matters ! A well spent morning coming together with our Marsh McLennan #India colleagues from #NCR offices at the Yamuna riverbank to clean, remove waste and help maintain the Okhla Bird Sanctuary and nearby spaces. The commitment we all carry to contribute to helping sustain the environment is a collective responsibility, and we all have a role to play. Amazed by the energy and participation of our colleagues and volunteers even in this heart, and the smiles on their faces said it all. #Proud to be part of an organization where contributing in sustainability and leading initiatives for environmental protection is core to what we do. I came back more aware not just about how we all need to #managewaste better and #cutdownplastic usage but also appreciate the role Okhla bird sanctuary plays in supporting the ecological balance in nearby areas. This sanctuary – a haven for over 300 bird species, especially waterbirds - was created as a response to the rapidly dwindling habitats for birds due to expansive urbanization and industrialization in the National Capital Region of India. In the heart of Mumbai’s waste management ecosystem are ReCircle’s unsung heroes - Safai Saathis, working diligently and tirelessly with their invisible strength to keep the city clean. At ReCircle, we are honoured to be part of an initiative that truly makes a difference towards our Safai Saathis. Through Project Utthaan, a success partnership between Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), thousands of Mumbai’s Safai Saathis are gaining access to life-altering government schemes like e-Shram, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) that bring a more dignified and secure life for the real heroes of waste management alongside operational efficiency. Workers like Geeta Ahire and Babloo Rao now carry e-Shram cards that give them and their families a safety net. We've also taken another step forward by upgrading our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Dahisar. This semi-automated facility allows us to process waste more efficiently while enhancing the livelihoods of these essential workers, offering them the security and recognition they deserve.
