Varnim Goyal attended Viva Technology 2024 in Paris, and had the opportunity to witness the evolving investment and startup ecosystem. The presence of industry leaders like Elon Musk and numerous technical experts made the event highly insightful. Here are his key observations from the event: 1) A Leap Towards AI: The new AI tools are driving innovations at a rapid pace, not just in B2C applications but also within industrial domains. This is accelerating the growth of the startup ecosystem and bringing forth new solutions, though it also raises questions about the defensibility of many business models. 2) Energy Tech and Decarbonisation: Carbon capture and utilisation remain significant focus areas, supported by large energy companies. Moreover, the EV ecosystem is receiving a much-needed boost in Europe, helping identify viable business cases. 3) Robotics: AI powered robots are on the verge of becoming part of everyday work, with logistics appearing as an early-adopter. 4) Ecosystem Perspective: It was inspiring to see France and Germany displaying a strong collaborative spirit, sharing strategies to drive technological advancements and support the startup arena. The first group of companies has officially joined the EIC Scaling Club, an initiative to foster the next generation of deep tech unicorns in Europe! Modvion develops engineered wood material, which can be used for construction, replacing concrete and steel, significantly lowering CO2 emissions. DRONAMICS introduces the world-leading cargo drone, "The Black Swan," a revolutionary fixed-wing unmanned aircraft that can transport 350 kg over 2,500 km. Transmetrics focuses on developing AI platforms tailored to the supply chain. It uses predictive analytics and machine learning to optimise transport planning. The logistics industry can benefit from their platform by reducing costs by up to 10%, increasing fleet utilisation by 14%, and reducing the fleet size by 12%. Exciting news for deep-tech innovators! The latest round of the EIC Accelerator has wrapped up, and 42 companies are set to receive up to €285 million in funding. Here’s what you need to know: Selection Process: From 1083 proposals, 242 companies were interviewed by seasoned investors and entrepreneurs. Only the best made it through. Blended Finance: 62% of these companies will get a mix of grants and equity investments. This boosts their funding potential to more than three times the initial EIC investment. Global Reach: The winners span 15 countries, showcasing diverse innovation across Europe.
