I always saw LinkedIn as the “grandpa” of all social media platforms—the wise figure with years of experience, someone you can rely on for tips and career recommendations. Now, I see it as the cool ‘gramp’ who’s up-to-date, fun, and still offering the best career advice and opportunities, but in a more engaging way that appeals to all age groups. That encouraged me to launch a series of "Let's LinkedIn" - hope you enjoy :) and feel free to share your own personal experiences. Episode 1 Listen before preparing your “comeback” response Coming from a journalism background, I tended to take a defensive approach when pitching my story angles to editors and TV producers. However, PR is different—you need to listen and understand that personalization doesn’t always work. It’s essential to follow standard approaches when dealing with clients and the media. Sharing your input and explaining yourself if needed is important, but try to listen and analyze the scenario before you jump in and respond.

It’s not the smartest person in the room who gets the media.. it’s the person who makes good TV. Being smart is never a bad thing… but being smart does not mean you’re interesting. Smart does not mean you know how to hold an audience. Or explain complex ideas in a way the layman can understand. Smart does not mean you know how to speak in soundbites. Or can handle -compellingly- answering a curveball question. Not long ago, a PR friend of mine was having trouble placing a client on TV… when she asked for feedback, it wasn’t, “We’re not interested in the story”. It wasn’t, “This isn’t newsworthy.” Not, “We’re in the midst of a political news cycle that’s crushing us. Maybe later.” It was, “Your client isn’t interesting.” It’s so frustrating. You're a brilliant entrepreneur who has poured everything into building your business. You've created game-changing products, and you know your industry inside out. You're confident that if you could just get in front of the right audience, your business would take off. 🚀 So, you start reaching out to media outlets, excited to share your expertise and insights. But despite your best efforts, you hear nothing back. It's like your pitches are disappearing into a black hole. 🕳️ But here's the harsh truth: being smart doesn't guarantee media success. 🎥 Think about it: when you're watching a TV interview, what keeps you engaged? Is it the person who drones on about technical details, or the one who tells a compelling story, succinctly, cohesively and makes you feel something? 💡 Media outlets are looking for people who can make complex ideas accessible, who can speak in soundbites, and who can handle tough questions with grace. They want guests who can make good TV, not just the smartest person in the room. 📺 How can media help you? 🎯 If you’re not sure, go to the link in comments and book a call. By the way.. these clients of mine *ARE* the smartest in the room! #mediatraining #video #oncamera #confidence #publicspeaking #publicity #PR #publicrelations

Listen, it's not where you start - it's where you finish that matters most! Starting strong is key, but finishing well is like the cherry on top of your PR Media sundae. Whether it's landing media placements, getting an award, securing speaking gigs, or nailing that podcast interview, how you close the deal can make all the difference. Remember, no one remembers the sprinter who only ran halfway! Every successful PR campaign begins with a rock-solid commitment and ends with a high-five-worthy goal. Finishing what you start in PR not only boosts your self-confidence but also opens the door to more bookings and media opportunities. It's like planting a garden; you don't just throw seeds and hope for the best—you water them, nurture them, and watch them bloom into fabulous media features. In PR and bookings, your follow-through is everything. If you commit to an interview, show up prepared and dazzle. If you're pitching a story, make sure you see it through to publication. Your dedication to finishing strong will make you the go-to person for future opportunities. So, buckle up, stay committed, and finish strong! Your future self will thank you #readysetgospeak https://lnkd.in/g8eJTEFT

Imagine a World Without Social Media! I just wrapped a mind-blowing interview with ABC TV about a future without social media. (Yes, you read that right!) Is it possible? How would we even do it? And honestly, could we? 15 years ago clients and audiences were yelling at me that social media was a "fad". Fast forward to today, it's practically an essential utility! But what if the script flipped again? The interview sparked a wild ride of possibilities! What would our lives look like? Would it be a digital detox utopia or a communication nightmare? I'll share the interview details when it airs, but for now, I really want to hear from YOU! Can you imagine a world without social media? What are the pros and cons? Share your thoughts in the comments! P.S. Looking to navigate the ever-evolving world of everything and its impact on your business? I am always building strategies for clients, wherein I am identifying challenges and solutions. With every challenge, comes a solution, but which one you choose to focus on, often determines your result. I am a solution-oriented kind of person, and thought it would be a worthwhile combo to share my solutions about PR in 2024. 🗣 • Challenge 1: Journalist layoffs means there’s less bandwidth to cover stories. Solution: Think like a journalist and ask yourself why as a media outlet, they have a purpose and a need to cover this. What makes this story interesting for their audience? Why will they care? What’s going to capture share of attention and drive them to actually read it? What are you giving the reporter for their story that will make readers want to share it within their networks? Think in terms of headlines and how it fits into their programming. • Challenge 2: Getting the ‘big dogs’ (NYT, WSJ, People, WashPo, TheVerge, etc.) to cover you. Solution: When building brand awareness, you can’t expect to start big from the get-go. You’ll get there, but it takes time. The question is: how much time do you have? Spend time getting to know your audience and meet them where they are. That could mean smaller places. Build from there. Keep at it, don’t quit, keep finding new ways to drive awareness and fit into the conversation. It all contributes to the greater result. • Challenge 3: Turnover and evolving media landscape means you’re always starting over with your relationships. Solution: Yep, and it’s not gonna change. So embrace it and do what you do best! Be patient with yourself though; it takes time. 😎 • Challenge 4: Media attention is SO competitive. Everyone is vying for coverage. Solution: Invest in your owned media channels and create your own editorial coverage. This means your socials, blogs, podcasts, video series. It not only allows for direct communication with your audience, but allows you to establish expertise and thought leadership. 📈 So there you have it. What new challenges would YOU like for me to take on? 💪 #communications #publicrelations #PR #PRagency #mediarelations

You are so much more important than the place you work. Yet many TV newsies have their identity tied up in news. Is that you? If so, I get it. I didn't realize I had my own brand outside of "I'm an anchor on Newschannel 2." I didn't realize that although my contract said they owned my name, my image, blah blah blah that I still was: MORE than just a news anchor. MORE than a reporter MORE than a producer. I have a TON of transferable skills I have a TON of value to offer ➡ I just needed to understand: 1) How to transfer my skills to another industry 2) Write a non-news resume 3) Level up my linkedin strategy (yes - there IS a strategy to finding a job you love!!) If you feel the tug to leave TV news, but don't know where to begin, I have a starting spot for you. I am hosting a free event on zoom for TV newsies who want to look for jobs outside of the news industry. If that sounds like you - check out the comments.

People ask me all the time how they can make their LinkedIn profile standout. The first, and most important thing I tell them, is to showcase your skills! We know that 49% of hirers on LinkedIn now explicitly use skills data to fill roles, so now is the time to brag about your skills. And here’s how you do it: 📚 Don’t just list your skills. Tell a story by sharing how you used your skills and the impact you made. ✨ Get noticed by adding your in-demand skills like AI, communication, or project management to the Experience section of your profile to increase your chances of showing up in search. 🔎 And, don’t forget to tag your Top Skills in the About section of your profile so you show up in searches. ✋ Don't swear at me. This does happen! But more often than not, it's the voice note whoops of excitement and the sheer joy when clients get featured that lightens up my day. Yes, that is why I LOVE my job and empowering people to pitch to dream publications, speaking gigs, TV and radio shows and of course podcasts. I love working with Charlotte, in the amazing pink boots, as she is an incredible team member helping clients to be seen everywhere using her past BBC and Sky journalist experience. So it's a perfect meeting of minds: PR + Journo = BIG FEATURES! This morning I had a burst of excitement on Whatsapp as a client - the LOVELY Ceylan Boyce - has been invited to take part in a special feature in a newspaper - which is totally relevant to her work. And a few weeks ago I had just finished speaking at Your Business Showcase hosted by Helen Brush Danielle Howell and Siobhan Johns when I was receiving all these voice notes...I couldn't play them as I was listening to a workshop. When the talk had ended I listened and was hearing a series of expletives and shrieks of joy as a client had just secured a dream TEDx gig! Ok, PLEASE swear at me! Next up I get a DM slide from an attendee at that show who'd just secured a spread in her local newspaper! That's what you call listening and taking action! Guess what? You can have a big short cut to guessing how to get into the press by registering to my free online PR Masterclass next Monday: Link in comments below - and please share if you know someone who wants the spotlight shone on them! 🌟 "PR is what people say about you when you aren't in the room." 💬✨ As I approach my 50th birthday this Friday, I realise more than ever that I live for the people I love and like; the rest doesn’t matter as much. It feels a bit odd to broadcast this, yet here we are, because when it comes to PR, it's all about reputation, it not just what we say about ourselves, but what others say when we are not there. Every interaction—be it through interviews, podcasts, networking events, or social posts—shapes the narrative of my brand and impacts how others feel and act. I’m totally committed to delivering exceptional service and products that stand out. Yet, your feedback is key at helps me see how I am doing and where I can improve to help you get into the press MORE or to make a start. So, I would greatly appreciate if you could take a moment to share your thoughts about your experiences with me—whether it’s through a freebie you downloaded, my posts, reading PR School, attending an event, one-on-one sessions, or a VIP day. I value all your feedback: the good, the bad, and the downright shiny 😊 so send it my way. Thank you so much for your time and energy, and remember, getting into the press is possible, and I'm here to help you achieve that. Natalie #Feedback #ClientOpinions #BrandBuilding
