Welcome to HackerOne, Kara Sprague! I’m excited to work together to (continue to) build a safer internet together. Go Kara! Go hackers! Go HackerOne! Go Marten! HackerOne and hackers are thriving because of Marten’s leadership and will continue to thrive under Kara’s leadership. The future of hacking is exciting and bright! — To live our value of defaulting to disclosure, here’s what I shared about Marten’s nine years of leadership at HackerOne. Reply from a Founder - 20240903 Marten, Thank you. Founders are not always Builders and Builders are not always Founders. You have built this company and are, together with our employees, the true Builder of HackerOne. You leave behind a company that has strong revenue, is innovative, and is recognized, used, and loved around the world. I can’t help but think that today’s announcement must be emotional for you, and know that it is for the rest of us, too. I hope you are proud. Proud of yourself, proud of the hackers, proud of our current and past employees who, like you, show up each day to be their best self. It’s you who inspired them to do so. The energy you have given and keep giving is a selfless act, and it is one of your traits that make you a phenomenal leader. There will be (many) times where we will miss your leadership. And there will be (a few) times we will be glad it’s not here. And there will be (plenty of) times where you will be happy you won’t have to deal with the obnoxious Founders. I’ve tried to pay attention at all times over the past nine years and believe it’s given me enough insights and learnings to continue to channel my Inner Marten for the next nine. You will soon no longer have the title of HackerOne CEO, but you will forever have the role of Builder of HackerOne. I think I speak for everybody when I say that we couldn’t have wished for a better person to have shared plenty of fuck ups and wins with. I would do it all over, and I think you would, too. Go Marten! Go Kara! Go hackers! Go HackerOne!
HackerOne appoints Kara Sprague as CEO! Sprague will succeed Marten Mickos as HackerOne’s Chief Executive Officer at a significant point of growth in the company. Under Mickos, the company became a category leader, expanding product offerings and cementing its unique brand identity. Sprague brings extensive technical leadership experience and a proven track record of aligning strategy to capture market and technology trends for large-scale transformation initiatives. Kara will extend HackerOne’s industry leadership as the most trusted provider of human-powered security for public sector organizations and Fortune 1000 companies. With Sprague at the helm, HackerOne will expand its platform capabilities for enterprise customers, invest in and grow its community, and continue to foster trust with customers, partners, and security researchers. When CrowdStrike CEO Michael Sentonas showed up to accept the Pwnie Award at hacker conference Def Con, people gasped. The award, doled out annually, pokes fun at companies with the biggest security failures of the year. CrowdStrike certainly deserved this one. The company’s July IT outage affected 8.5 million enterprise systems running Microsoft Windows around the world, causing them to crash—and messing up air travel, broadcasting, and many more industries. But accepting the Pwnie was a lesson in leadership. Sentonas demonstrated that good leadership sometimes means owning your mistakes. He said, “We got this horribly wrong… and it’s super important to own when you do things well, but it’s super important to own when you do things horribly.” He then went on to explain that he planned to display the trophy at CrowdStrike HQ as a reminder to his teams to always strive to do their best. Leadership is certainly not easy. Often, it means taking responsibility when someone on your team makes a mistake. The right candidate for a leadership role is one who knows how to stay humble and curious. In my role as a recruiter at Gables Search Group, I strive to find those people for my clients. #failup

When Michael Sentonas accepted the Pwnie Award at Def Con, the moment was palpable. This annual recognition sheds light on the biggest slip-ups in cybersecurity, and there's no sugarcoating here—CrowdStrike was front and center. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐓 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐭 𝟖.𝟓 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲. It disrupted air travel, broadcasting, and more, driving home the reality that even the giants can stumble. Sentonas' acceptance speech resonated with a key principle of leadership: accountability. “𝘞𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨,” he said, emphasizing the importance of owning mistakes, alongside successes. He plans to showcase the award at CrowdStrike HQ as a constant reminder to his team—a tangible call to always strive for excellence. In the world of executive recruiting, finding leaders who embody humility and are eager to learn is crucial. At KIP Search, that’s our mission—identifying those who can steer organizations in challenging times. Last Friday's CrowdStrike event made me reflect on my experiences with major network issues and outages as an account manager. It was not this significant, but if you work for tech companies, it will happen. Here's what I've learned: S**t happens. It's an unfortunate reality in our tech-driven world. Thinking about it, I am very grateful for working with leaders who rose to the challenge and opportunity to serve. Blame is rarely simple. These situations are often complex, with multiple factors at play. What truly matters is how we respond under pressure. In my experience, account manager's and sales team's best actions are: • Stay calm and communicate clearly • Be transparent about what you know (and don't know) • Focus on solutions, not finger-pointing • Show empathy for affected clients (stay and keep working with them, even when they are so upset!) • Learn from the experience and improve processes These challenging moments are opportunities to demonstrate our leadership, resilience, and commitment to our clients. To those who are still working and dealing with this issue, my thoughts are with you. ❤️ Kia Kaha! Have you faced a similar situation? How did you navigate it?

This is a Mike Zachman appreciation post! First, Mike is a genuinely kind human being, which is most important. Organizing a community and running CISO Dinners & Conferences is a big task, but having people like Mike on your side makes it so much better! I have started to lose count of how many times Mike has graciously stepped up to help up out in a big way, and always with a smile! #CISOcommunity, Show Mike some love in the comments if you have had similar experiences:) #CSO #CISO #Chicago #cyberriskalliance #CRA #CISOdinner
