Is purpose "investible" ? 🎙️💥🫣 Happy to stir the pot on this one having been invited into the debate by Tech4Good South West's Annie Legge... Unfortunately I think the way most companies approach purpose is not investible... Too often, anything ESG or CSR related is isolated from the rest of the business. Treated only as a cost: signed-off, then written-off and largely forgotten about. You're setting yourself up for failure with this approach. You'll be unlikely to deliver the level of social / environmental impact expected. And of course it will not contribute to the wider success of the company. However, if you create a shared sense of purpose throughout your organisation where everyone understands 3 things: 1️⃣ what the company can be the best in the world at doing (commercial activities) 2️⃣ how the company can make the world a better place (impact initiatives) 3️⃣ how my day-to-day role contributes to both of these (making it relatable to everyone) ... then suddenly purpose is capable of: ❤️🔥 inspiring your team, 🌎 achieving meaningful positive impact, 📈 and increasing financial performance as a result. It isn't easy, but many companies are already doing this and rewriting the rules of success. It takes courage to be genuinely purpose-led, but the rewards of getting it right are huge. In Garry Pratt's example in the thread below, finding investors that are aligned with your values and believe in your mission is just as important as what is on the term sheet. Great to see fellow #techforgood enthusiasts at EntreConf and EntreConf Awards at what was a glorious day both outside and inside @Watershed Bristol yesterday exploring entrepreneurialism. I spent the day listening, observing, and noticing the broader conversation around entrepreneurs, but with my own lens of the traits, the complexity, #resilience and the support needed for #techforgood startups and entrepreneurs. Inspiring speakers and talks throughout the day, including the 'perfect pitch' presentation with a framework of ❓ Product (what) ❓ Process (the how) ❓ Positioning (opportunity you are going after) ❓ People (the team) I feel the challenge is set for the missing "P" for #purpose with the view that yes, it is important of course, but it isn't "investable". This deeply saddens me but at the same time fuels why we need communities like Tech4Good South West to wake up the investment community to what #techforgood businesses and #socialenterprises are, and how they will lead the way in achieving success. Financially sustainable business that ALSO deeply bring #impact, deeply conscious of responsibility for the world in which they are inhabiting. Why are we only championing a traditional model of investment and a company that accelerates growth, profit and saleable businesses?
