The initial Muzlim conquest of the northern parts of the country and surrounding regions, from the eighth century to the 12th century, saw little success. Whatever success the invaders could achieve was temporary and they could not establish their rule. This was because of the continuous resistance offered by the Indian kings, one after another, decade after decade, and century after century. Vigraharaja IV successfully resisted the attacks of Turkish Muzlims. Vigraharaja IV defeated Ghaznavid rulers Bahram Shah and Khusrau Malik. The Delhi-Shivalik pillar inscription describes him as the destroyer of mlechchhas (foreigners).
