Put your phone down and pick up a book It will help you sleep better. Except it didn’t. I just couldn’t put this one down. Despite going to bed fairly early, I did not stop until 2.30am, and until I had devoured every single page of this- including the epilogue and the note from Coleen Hoover. Why? Because aside from the central theme of abuse which resonated with me having sadly experienced it at close quarters as a child, the ripples of this book had me reframing so many aspects of life. The movement of breaking generational traumas is not a new thing. But trauma isn’t just experienced in homes, it can be in our social settings, and yes even our workplaces (see my next post on moral injury). Those who know me well will know that leaving the legal field in a better shape than it was when I started has been my motto for the best part of this year. Part of the above is breaking generational stereotypes, eroding toxicity in the workplace and yes breaking workplace trauma. Because whether we like it or not- it exists. And it’s our choice whether it’s ending or continuing with us. And it’s not just about breaking. It’s about creating. Creating autonomy and belonging and re- focussing our gaze on what makes us stronger and better. Because after all, when we strengthen one- we strengthen all. More on the above and moral injury next week and here’s hoping I don’t pick up another sleep slayer at the airport tonight! #workplacetrauma #breakingthecycle #humanisingtheworkspace
