#Health cannot be measured solely by adherence to a medical model of care (#medicalmodelofcare). We need to expand the definition of health and consider it through the lenses of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Without access to essential resources such as #food, #water, #shelter, and #sleep, no intervention to improve health (as prescribed in the medical model) can be truly effective. Addressing these fundamental physiological needs is the #foundation for overall #well-being. Additionally, ensuring safety and security, including financial and personal stability, is crucial for reducing stress and strengthening mental health. Social connections and emotional support fulfill the need for love and belonging, which are essential for emotional and psychological well-being. My company, Guide2Care, has a mission to remind others to see a #person instead of just a patient, client, member (#insteadofjustpatient), or other #labels that create a power dynamic between service providers and those seeking services. Instead, we should recognize that each health story (#healthstory) is ever-changing and that being part of a person's life is a #gift. They invite and allow us into their lives to offer #support while they share their #life stories and contribute to their well-being journey. It’s an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by providing #guidance, emotional support (#emotionalsupport), and #genuine care. This connection enriches both their lives and ours, creating a #mutually #beneficial #relationship built on #trust and #compassion. Are Physicians Lonely? Unpacking the Isolation in Healthcare I remember coming home, newly married, from a long day at the hospital. The thought of having to put on a happy face and engage was overwhelming. I felt like I had to be everything to everyone, all the time. Thankfully, I reached out to my mentor, shared my feelings, and gained invaluable perspective. It reminded me that it's okay to pause and acknowledge what I truly needed in that moment. Admitting I was struggling was the first step toward feeling better. We often pride ourselves on our ability to handle immense pressures and heavy responsibilities. Yet, there's an aspect of our profession that isn't frequently discussed—loneliness. It's a fundamental part of being human, but many of us have been conditioned to pretend we aren't affected by it. We can feel lonely even thou there are people around us all the time. We ignore the warning signs and rationalize our isolation, telling ourselves, "It's not that bad," or "I don't have time." We stay busy to avoid facing the reality that we might be distancing ourselves from meaningful connections. This disconnection isn't always apparent until something drastic happens—a relationship ends, or our health takes a hit. Admitting I was struggling was the first step toward feeling better. We don’t have to wait for a crisis to acknowledge our needs or seek help. A life of consultation (getting a coach)—using the wisdom and perspectives of others to navigate our blind spots—has been a game changer for my personal and professional satisfaction. It has helped me maintain and strengthen my relationships, not only with my spouse and children but also with myself. Of course, that is why I became a coach myself. Let's start a conversation about the realities of physician loneliness and the transformative power of reaching out. Have you experienced similar feelings? How do you cope with the emotional demands of our profession? #PhysicianWellness #MentalHealth #Healthcare #WorkLifeBalance #PhysicianBurnout #physiciancoach #burnout #physicianwellbeing
