Lincoln to cut more dealership locations this year after record 2023 decrease BREANA NOBLE The Detroit News Lincoln said Thursday that it cut approximately 100 U.S. stores last year, a record number, and could shed around that many this year in an effort to bring its footprint closer in line with other premium brands. The Ford Motor Co. luxury brand is working with dealers one-on-one on details of the buyouts, said spokesperson Anika Salceda-Wycoco, who declined to provide details on those transactions. Lincoln sold close to 82,000 vehicles in the United States in 2023, a 2% decrease year-over-year. Meanwhile, Cadillac sales rose 9%, and Lexus' were up almost 24%. "Our priority is to be where the luxury clients are and where the luxury market is," Salceda-Wycoco said. The consolidation has been ongoing for several years and is not related to electrified offerings, she said. Lincoln had approximately 500 stores at the end of 2023, down from 685 in 2021. In 2003, I went to work for the highest volume single point pre-owned dealership on the West Coast - we occupied three city blocks in Portland Oregon and sold upwards of 400 cars a month, 75% of which were sold to deep sub-prime customers. I wanted to know how this store was generating that kind of volume, and HOW they were getting those deals bought because up to that point, I had only worked in the new car space. I had been running the Internet Sales Department/BDC for a nine franchise dealer group that focused on A and B paper. Very risk averse. And, at that time, not terribly lucrative for us order takers. I knew there was opportunity in figuring out how to use the Internet to promote used cars (that hadn't really caught on yet) and to provide solutions to credit challenged buyers. Over the subsequent three years, Oh Boy, did I learn. Fast Forward to 2024. The "lead" market is saturated with stale recycled customer info because NO ONE COMPANY can self-generate enough volume to satisfy demand. So I pose the question - HOW do you wisely spend your marketing dollars where they are going to give you the greatest value and potential to generate plus sales and the profitability that comes with those sales? Franchised auto dealers polled by Cox Automotive Inc. in the first quarter perceived no improvement in their markets — but no worsening conditions, either. However, those polled continued to show the sourest sentiment since the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S., as growing inventory shrank profits and interest rates and other economic factors weighed on customers. "Dealers are making less money, and that really weighs on a lot of the outlook," Cox Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke said Tuesday while discussing the combined franchised and independent dealership survey results. He called reduced profitability "really a franchise story. Because independents have been feeling that for several years." He said franchised #cardealers also are now reporting "the same things on costs and pricing pressure" that had previously been felt more by the independent sector.
