'Auto-normativity' goes beyond the phrase 'car-centric.' It exposes how deeply rooted travel by automobile really is. But, where should we be shifting out focus instead? This concept is discussed in the ITF - International Transport Forum 2023 Report: "Improving the Quality of Walking and Cycling in Cities" and summarized in a blog written by Angela van der Kloof. As a bike manufacturer and cycling enthusiasts, we couldn’t let this week pass unnoticed. This year's theme, "Our Shared Space," highlights the importance of fair allocation of public space, which means fewer cars and more room for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. 🚶♂️🚲 In cities that respect everyone’s needs, the air is cleaner, noise levels are lower, and the quality of life is better. Join us in embracing this week and especially the Car-Free Day on September 22nd by experiencing urban mobility differently. Walk more, use public transport, hop on a bike or a scooter. - Why you ride a bike? - Why not? Istanbul is a chaotic environment for all traffic participants. Traveling plans from point A to point B require a surgeon's sensitivity. Driving means dealing with traffic congestion, while using public transport means facing crowds. The psychological impact of these crowds can be overwhelming. So, is there a way to overcome this situation? Cyclists believe there is. Staying away from traffic and experiencing the health-related, environmental, and psychological benefits of cycling is inspiring. As someone who used to see frowning faces in Istanbul, meeting such positive people is a pleasant surprise. But along with this surprise, the main question arises: is it possible to cycle safely in a city like Istanbul? Cyclists offer various solutions, from riding during safe hours to strictly committing to traffic rules. It’s not hard to see that these solutions arise largely from the lack of infrastructure. It's a painful reality that cyclists have to be creative because urban planning practices have left no room for bicycles. Given that Istanbul's urbanization strategies in the 20th and early 21st centuries focused on motor vehicles, it’s no surprise that the outcome is what it is. The geographical formations also complicate matters; however, with technology and smart solutions, these obstacles can be overcome. There are successful examples from Turkey and around the world. But for these solutions to become widespread, public demand is essential.
