What's your opinion on going with an all-in-one tech platform vs. specialists? I'll go first: when we started Ovation, we tried to be everything to anyone. We worked with tons of verticals and provided feedback, reputation management, marketing, loyalty, streaming service, dog groomers...(ok maybe not all of those)... And this didn't work for us. Internally, we weren't focused on solving one problem and so we'd go on product wild goose chases. And externally, it made our value prop less clear. When we decided to become the best guest feedback tool for restaurants, we took off. We became so intimately aware of the problem we were solving and created best-in class solutions that restaurants have loved (not to mention it is an industry i have known so well and love so much!!). On the other hand, I see the appeal of the generalists. You don't have to put as much effort into building your tech stack, understanding deep problems, thinking about integrations, etc. But you sacrifice quality in each area. I personally see building your tech stack similar to building a starting line. The whole thing needs to be solid, not just one piece. If you're interested in this, Joe Guszkowski from Restaurant Business put a great piece together about this with Abhinav Kapur and me. I truly appreciate the conversation and interested in everyone's thoughts! Read here: https://lnkd.in/eXwDSUva

Building a successful company takes a community, and SkipTheDishes is no different. A Winnipeg success story, the food delivery platform has over 25,000 restaurants in its community. John Stackhouse sits down with SkipTheDishes CEO Kevin Edwards, who shares the founding story of Skip, how the company is helping its restaurant community with a $24 million commitment during COVID-19, and why the company is so focused on building a supportive environment for the next tech success story. Key takeaways: The future of restaurants is a hybrid – the ones that will thrive will draw people in but also reach out to customers and connect with them in unique ways. Restaurants need to become digital natives and harness the power of social to engage their customers.Canada has no shortage of tech talent, but for tech companies to thrive, they need to scale, and to harness the power of data.

The power of belief in ideas. For the past few years along with my awesome team, we have been quietly building Captain AI. After encouragement from the people around me - I have decided to start sharing more about our journey and what we have learned so far. For my first story, I will share how one customer's belief in a product led to the birth of Captain. It all started in London, UK, where the Captain team originally began with an idea called Henchman — a delivery marketplace aggregator competing with Deliveroo. We were one of the first companies in London to offer delivery drivers to restaurants, a market that Deliveroo now rightly dominates. Henchman was invited to the European Food Service Summit in Zurich where we presented how we were making delivery more efficient with technology using our delivery fleet Henchman in London. Despite being a startup, we shared the stage with huge unicorn founders like David Buttress of Just Eat Takeaway.com, Andrew Rennie of Domino's Europe, and William S. of Deliveroo. We presented how we were using AI to predict driver demand and effectively increase deliveries per hour per driver to lower driver cost. We called this concept and backend technology “Captain”. After the presentation, Enrico Sodano, the CEO of Vapiano Switzerland approached us and said he wanted to use the software we had built internally at Henchman for his restaurant Labor costs for drivers in Switzerland are incredibly high (around $30 per hour) and using technology to make the backend of the restaurant dispatch process more efficient was crucial for Enrico Sodano. His vision was years ahead of its time and involved optimizing everything from kitchen to driver to customer. 🚀 Enrico Sodano became our first customer and led to the pivot of Henchman and the birth of Captain.ai. We sold Henchman to Rico Logistics, launched Captain and ended up flying our entire team to Enrico’s restaurant where we worked relentlessly on-site to get the beta version of Captain launched. Seven years later and Captain has become a leading software in delivery for restaurant chains trusted by nation-wide pizza chains and POS systems alike. If it wasn't for Enrico, Captain may not exist today. Sometimes it only takes one person to believe in a vision and idea to inspire and drive others to make that a reality. I’m grateful and thankful for Enrico. Thank you friend.
