Can #Microsoft have their cake and eat it? For all the positive talk about using #Azure to push forward #decarbonisation and #energytransition we have to remember that Azure is also being used to locate and extract gas and oil quicker than ever. We must use #LinkedIn to talk about this because this platform we enjoy and use is part of the Microsoft ecosystem. So maybe I should rephrase the question: can we have our cake and eat it?https://lnkd.in/exeMbHRz

In a world that's increasingly hungry for data, where servers and storage work tirelessly round the clock, Amazon Web Services (AWS) stands out for powering the digital age with their ability to innovate. They are leading the charge towards a sustainable future without sacrificing growth or performance. In their pursuit of net-zero operations, Amazon actively invests in technologies fostering environmental well-being, committing $2 billion through the Climate Pledge Fund. They're even backing innovative carbon removal tech, like committing to 250,000 metric tons of removal via direct air capture (DAC). But for AWS, it's not just about relying on renewables in making positive impacts for the benefit of the environment. It's about cutting down on excess energy use altogether. This is part of its commitment to becoming the 'cleanest' cloud to run enterprise workloads in the world. On the ongoing debate of profit versus planet, AWS proves both can thrive together. #aws #awscloud #amazonwebservices

Five key stats show how AWS is helping to create a more sustainable future. 1. AWS is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy and plans to power their operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 2. AWS is committed to achieving Amazon's goal of net-zero carbon by 2040. 3. Amazon Graviton chips are 60% more efficient than non-Graviton chips. 4. AWS is using computational fluid dynamics to predict, track and optimise their data-centre cooling systems. 5. Studies by 451 Research have shown that AWS’ infrastructure is 3.6 times more energy efficient than the median of U.S. enterprise data-centres surveyed and up to five times more energy efficient than the average in Europe. 451 Research also found that AWS can lower customers’ workload carbon footprints by nearly 80% compared to surveyed enterprise data centres, and up to 96% once AWS is powered with 100% renewable energy. We at Habitat3 believe in working towards a more sustainable future and as cloud specialists we're proud to be AWS Partners. The future energy war might have already started, possibly right here in #Toronto. The impending #AI #singularity will require far more energy than anticipated. This is why major tech companies, including Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS), are eager to secure a continuous and uninterrupted electricity supply for their GPU clusters. https://lnkd.in/gMx2_i6e

The benefits of AI in energy & sustainability far outweigh the costs - Microsoft is working to streamline the logistical footprint of AI while unlocking its potential to foster new science, advance new energy technology, and optimize energy system operations. AI is an essential tool in the race to address climate change.
Our Cloud Operations + Innovation team, along with many others at Microsoft, are on a quest to innovate across every part of our business to deliver more sustainable cloud services. Two of the biggest challenges Microsoft is facing are energy management and water intensity, which we are addressing by changing the way we design, build and operate our datacenters. We’re focused on the path to 100% zero-carbon electricity, 100% of the time for our datacenter operations. We are continuing to drive improvements in datacenter energy management, while working to design solutions to reduce impact of datacenter operations on water-stressed areas to advance our progress on the road to becoming water positive. And more. For a deeper dive into how we are tackling AI energy challenges, read Microsoft Chief Sustainability Officer Melanie Nakagawa's blog, published today. #MSSustainability #AI

We did it! 7 years earlier 👏🏻 ♻️ Amazon meets 100% renewable energy for the electricity consumed by all operations, including our #AWS Regions and data centers ✅ 💯 Achieving this goal is an important milestone in our efforts to meet our The Climate Pledge commitment of net-zero carbon by 2040. In that line and as artificial intelligence (AI) 🤖 becomes more prevalent, its environmental impact can't be ignored. A groundbreaking new study reveals a simple solution - migrating your AI workloads to the AWS Cloud. The findings show AWS's infrastructure is up to 4.1x more efficient than on-premises data centers. And when optimized on AWS, the associated carbon emissions can be slashed by a staggering 99%, see more details here:https://lnkd.in/d9GfMDik #Amazon #100RenewableEnergy #TheClimatePledge #Sustainable #ResponsibleTech
