The best way to connect with the next generation? Esports. Rodrigo Samwell, CCO, speaks to Creativebrief on how brands can tap into the esports audience and the rules the brand can play to ensure they give back to the community instead of showing up uninvited. 1. Read the room: Develop content and brand ideas that align with what your audience actually wants instead of what will make for a great PR headline for you. If your brand is entering this space, you need to be doing something authentic, and you need to have a long-term strategy to execute that authenticity. 2. Invest in the long-term: In order to develop a beneficial esports and gaming strategy, brands shouldn’t look to use different tournaments as test and learn cases. They should instead take a long term view, turning it into a core element of an overarching marketing strategy. 3. Have a clear storytelling strategy (and learn from DHL): once you’ve established where your brand might fit into the esports ecosystem, develop the story you want to tell. This is where data comes into play. Not simply as a few standalone stats but instead as the start of your narrative. 4. Build a community of lifetime fans Because the reality is that, once an esports fan, always an esports fan. So if you can capture attention, and more essentially, loyalty, when your audience is the next one coming through, well, then you have them for life. Understand the community you’re stepping into; tell a story that rings true to both your brand and the audience you’re trying to reach; invest long term not short term, and you’ll have a next generation fan base that will love you for life.
