Esports orgs have gone through a tough year in 2023 and many are looking to bounce back in 2024. Alexander Lee of Digiday explores how notable orgs are looking at stability and sustainability moving forward. G2 Esports - The European org continues to sign notable sponsors like Mastercard, Herman Miller, and others to grow its commercial arm. - G2 is looking to restructure its leadership by hiring Henning Christiansson to help drive longer-term diverse revenue streams. OTK Media - The org is more of a “gaming org” than an “esports org” with the focus on casual gaming over competitive gaming. - Every member of OTK has equity in the org and everything the org does is content (including its live streamed shareholder meetings). - OTK is also seemingly transforming gaming content into a predictable media buy for brands with standardizing pricing, de-risking partnerships, and guaranteeing impressions. NRG Esports - The org has signed new partners like Samsung Electronics and Panda Restaurant Group and has also fueled its growth via its casual side too. - Full Squad Gaming has a variety of separate partnerships from its esports teams under the NRG banner. Esports doesn't need more consultants analyzing challenges and solutions. Esports needs more actual operators who are willing to actually build a better future. The potential of esports is massive, and there is no way that this won't grow into one of the biggest sports and entertainment categories out there over the next decades. It's not a trend - it's already an integral part of the sports and entertainment future. The origins of the esports ecosystem, are a highly community-driven and sub-culture style of environment, with a massive nerdy passion for video games. It started over 25 years ago, driven by people who never cared anything at all about what was popular. All that mattered was the love of games in all shapes and forms. And at rocket speed over the last 6-7 years, it's been propelled into worldwide mainstream attention, having to grow up overnight, doing what other sports have taken 100+ years to do. What a dramatic shift and tall ask, which obviously brings great operational complexities from both a business and people side. In simple terms, esports completely skipped puberty, evolving into a bigger thing than most people imagined. That's an incredibly hard thing to do when you need to push on all cylinders and leverage the momentum of esports, while still having to stand the test of time, not having the cost outpace the revenue by too high of a margin, ultimately leading to stagnation or worse, implosion. We need to create a sustainable ecosystem, with an abundance of thriving stakeholders that collaborate on continuously producing fantastic storylines and entertaining content, filled with emotions, paving the way for esports to be around for centuries. So yeah, esports don't need more consultants and experts telling us the obvious flaws and immaturity of our growing industry - we get it, much more than you think. Instead, stop being on the sidelines giving advice, jump in the foxhole, and show us what you've got. We've got plenty of shovels!
