So, we’ve once again worked someone to death. The second reported in the last few weeks. That doesn’t count the unreported cases. Folks, companies are comprised of people. That’s it. Without people there’s no commerce in the human world. Investors get no returns. Executives don’t get rich. It amazes me that people won’t tolerate others who hold different political views than them but company practices that literally cost lives are OK. We know overwork, layoffs and toxic work environments have a profound impact on mental health. - Almost double the risk of suicide. - 4x more likely to abuse substances or family members. - Depression and anxiety - PTSD If a hospital’s practices were correlated with these, there would be public outcry and lawsuits. Yet companies are allowed to overwork and layoff all the time with no consequence. I don’t share these facts to be dramatic. They are simply the facts that corporations and we as a society refuse to acknowledge. So I wonder, how many more people have to die before we enforce change in acceptable business practices? How many more spouses and children have to end up in the ER before we stop being afraid to force real dialogue? My gut tells me a lot. We should all be ashamed.

Dear Employee, Please note that while it is good to work and to sometimes stretch yourself beyond your limit, there is a limit to which you can go. No work no matter the pay is worth dying for or making your children fatherless or motherless or making your spouse a widow or widower. If a target is unrealistic (not conforming to the principles of SMART) politely decline the offer no matter how much is being offered. Dear Employer, While it is good to set goals and targets, please note that every goal must be realistic. Do not over push a performing staff or a non performing staff all in the name of "they can do more, they have a lot of untapped potentials. In a bid to tap into the untapped potentials of that employee, he or she can burn out and "tap the current of death". Everyone needs to be careful and guided.

It is heartbreaking to hear that an employee felt the need to take such a tragic step. No job or target should ever come at the cost of a human life. HR policies must be designed and enforced to monitor employee mental health and well-being. The value of a person's life is immeasurable, and no company's success should ever overshadow the importance of their employees' lives. What about the family left behind? What was their fault in this? They now have to face life without their loved one. We must remember that no target or profit can justify the loss of a human being. It's time to take a stand and ensure that our workplaces are safe and supportive environments where every employee's mental and emotional health is a priority. At the same time, we should recognize and appreciate our organizations. As they genuinely care for the well-being of employees, understanding their needs and emotions, and providing support beyond the workplace.
