Darryn Quayle’s Post

It was an absolute privilege to join this very different conversation on critical minerals. My old mate Jeff Townsend captures it very well in his post, suffice to reinforce the critical role of collaboration and technology innovation, especially in finance, in accelerating the global energy transition. Thank you to the Australia-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, NAB and my fellow panelists for an inspiring session. A big shout out also to Helen Beatty for her leadership and brilliant agenda. Looking forward to continuing the momentum toward a more sustainable future together.

Founder at Critical Minerals Association, critical minerals supply chains

Absolutely great fun taking part in the Australia-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce #criticalminerals panel at Australia House. It was a highly entertaining and different conversation to the usual ones we have had in the critical minerals space. Thanks to NAB for sponsoring. I loved being a benevolent dictator for the session- I could get used to that: The rise and rise of Michael Rimmer (or Jeff townsend in this case) I think there was some consensus across the panel that there needs to be an entirely aligned push towards integrated supply chains across multiple partner nations. That ESG, price and security of supply are rarely aligned and perhaps bringing those in step is part of the biggest battle right now. And that if we are going to challenge climate change, or to deliver ESG, or bring down prices we need to fund, embrace and support new technology. Especially if it’s strategic value far outweighs its commercial value. The final point for me was that while we all agreed Europe has the most comprehensive critical minerals strategy, its application has perhaps been the most poorly delivered out of the nations we discussed. And so there is a lesson that it’s better to deliver on less than fail to deliver on a lot. A thoroughly enjoyable discussion with some serious points perhaps well hidden.
