One common failure in game development that I have noticed more often recently has been making assumptions about product-market fit. The initial idea for what market you should target with what kind of game is certainly a creative endeavour initially, but once you are set on your idea it's time to validate. Run ad tests, run surveys, explore games that target similar audiences. All of these actions will help prevent you from investing months or years into a game only to see your sales figures and/or Day 1 retention numbers fall well short of benchmarks. When you assume things about what an audience wants without evidence, you make an ass out of both u and me! Even the most fun games can suffer from not being right for their audience.
