Can you tell we're coming into an election year? Baringa's take on the #nuclearenergy debate happening at the moment, independent of CSIRO, is included in today's The Australian Financial Review. TL;DR, our team finds that nuclear would take 20 years to build...this means we would still need to substantially replace the retiring coal capacity with renewables and storage. We sell these commercial insights to banks, investors and energy companies who are ultimately asking a non-political question: Where should we put our money? https://lnkd.in/g3saUK25

Germany’s Habeck is making a last-ditch effort to get delayed energy legislation over the line before elections. At stake is how to back up renewable energy. He wants to start tendering soon for gas plants that can one day run on hydrogen. The opposition, whose votes he now needs, prefers carbon capture and storage technology (CCS). A draft law seen by Montel has pitched a compromise. “The government is looking at running the gas-fired power plants with CCS. We think that’s important.” Also in this week’s Energy Transition Weekly: Sweden’s army defends a government decision to strike 32 GW of applications to build offshore wind on defence grounds. Wind energy stakeholders in the country remain despondent. “We are on our way to ending up on investors’ blacklists of countries with political risk.” A competition watchdog expresses concern about the power of Germany’s biggest electricity producer. And UK climate policies support interest in commercial deals to build renewable energy, despite intense competition from subsidies enticing developers with more security. #Renewables #Nuclear #Solar #Wind #Emissions

Yesterday's #Budget2024 contained little that wasn't already reported in the papers beforehand. There were a number of energy announcements however. Here's what caught my eye 👇 1️⃣ More than £1billion for the renewable electricity auction (AR6). This is the largest renewables budget yet and includes £800 million for offshore wind, £120 million for established technologies such as onshore wind and solar and £105 million for emerging technologies in such as floating offshore wind and geothermal. 2️⃣ The 35% surcharge on oil and gas profits (aka the "windfall tax") has been extended by 12 months. It had been due to end in March 2028. 3️⃣ Confirmation of an extra £120million for the Green Industries Growth Accelerator. Total funding is now over £1biilion, aimed at boosting advanced manufacturing across clean energy supply chains - including £390 million for electricity networks and offshore wind sectors, and around £390 million for carbon capture, utilisation and storage and hydrogen. 4️⃣ Confirmation that Great British Nuclear (GBN) will buy two sites - Wylfa and Oldbury - for new nuclear projects. GBN is also now launching the next phase of their Small Modular Reactor technology selection process with eligible companies able to access tender documentation. 5️⃣ An update on progress on network reforms to speed up grid connections. Earlier grid connection dates will be offered to projects worth £40 billion, and a new process will prevent projects being offered a specific connection date until they demonstrate progress towards joining the grid from next January. A new taskforce will explore Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms in a bid to help un-block disputes between landowners and electricity network operators. The headlines will all be about the windfall tax but the confirmation of budget for the AR6 renewable auction could turn out to be the most impactful announcement yesterday. #energy #energytransition #decarbonisation

There has always been enough fossil fuels to power human civilization for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years, and nuclear energy is effectively infinite. Michael Shellenberger Why Californians Have Some of the Highest Power Bills in the U.S. California is doing all it can to expand renewable energy production and rebuild its electrical infrastructure after flaws led to a series of devastating wildfires. The state’s big utilities are spending billions to bury power lines and insulate wires, while at the same time moving quickly away from fossil fuels by building big solar and wind farms and transmission lines to carry the power. https://lnkd.in/d-gq9D82

Data Center Coalition and Dominion Energy can’t hide the truth anymore. What is missing from the Dominion Energy disclosure are the new PJM transmission lines coming into Virginia originating from coal. “Warrenton, Va. (November 18, 2024) – The State Corporation Commission required Dominion to supplement its Oct. 15, 2024, Integrated Resource Plan with modeling plans that meet the requirements of the Virginia Clean Economy Act and show scenarios without data center load. Dominion Energy has begrudgingly responded and the results are alarming, yet unsurprising. It shows that scenarios without data center load growth result in less natural gas and nuclear additions and significantly lower infrastructure costs, demonstrating unequivocally that continued unchecked data center growth will cost ratepayers, our communities, and the environment.”
