𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆, in 1817, the world’s first bicycle, the Laufmaschine (running machine in German), was invented by the German inventor Baron Karl von Drais. The bicycle got its name from the fact that it had no pedals, and one had to run to operate it. Drais managed to successfully complete a 14-kilometer test run, thus proving it to be a more viable option for commuting than a horse. In today’s world, where there is a dire need for sustainable alternatives to save the environment, bicycles have stood the test of time as the most reliable and green source of transportation. Bicycles offer a multitude of benefits, including: ☑ 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 - Bicycles cause no carbon emissions, unlike fuel-powered vehicles, which are one of the key determinants of environmental pollution. ☑ 𝗟𝗼𝘄-𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 - Since very few resources are required for the production and maintenance of a bicycle, it has a negligible effect on the environment. ☑ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - Using bicycles on a daily basis could facilitate minimizing traffic congestion, therefore enhancing the surrounding air quality. ☑ 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 - As no fuel is required to operate a bicycle and no regular maintenance is needed, one could save immense money-wise. ☑ 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Cycling is a form of physical activity that, when done regularly, can enhance the quality of life, thus reducing the risk of various chronic ailments, which further helps save hugely on healthcare costs. Being carbon-neutral in nature, cost-friendly, and the reason for a healthy lifestyle, cycling is a timeless mode of conveyance. 18 months ago, few weeks after relocating to BCN, Clemence Vincent-Le Priol and I made a rather big purchase, a Tern GSD 🚲. Such long tail bike are perfectly suited for 2 young kids, spot on for us. ⏩ Fast forward 4000 km later and countless family trips, I am convinced this is a transformative mobility medium for our cities. Simply put, this bike made our life as a family better. Let's dig in: 1️⃣ Incredibly versatile: from school drop-off, to large groceries shopping, climbing mountains or hitting the beach. We have gone places with it. 2️⃣ Efficient: within 7km radius, such transportation as a family is unbeatable. You just get faster from A to B with way less hassle. 3️⃣ Enjoyable: for the kiddos, there is no debate whether they would rather pop in the car or in the back of Azul (family nick name for it) We constantly hear them laugh, play and sightsee. Their geographic sense of the surroundings is incomparable. All this while getting your daily dose of activity as a parent. 💵 There is undoubtedly a price tag to it and we are fortunate enough to be able to offer it. Yet, would I exchange this against a pricey second car? - Hell no! Our cities would just be greater with more of these in our streets. And better for us: from ears to legs, from lungs to 🧠 ... It's just a net ➕. So how can we do to accelerate this transformation? No doubt, that A) better cycling friendly infrastructure B) make it more accessible (leasing, bike scheme...) are both a must. But something as simple as giving it a shot also helps... I can't portray no longer having my daily dose of family adventure. As we say in French, "l'essayer c'est l'adopter".
