This seems almost too simple, but the bottom line is it’s very strategic. A great brand has core assets and positioning targeting specific personas and customers. What % of revenue should a construction company spend on marketing? I’ve been asked this multiple times, and although it depends, I use 0.5% as a good starting point. Yesterday, Aaron and I had lunch with Caitlyn Cook who leads marketing at Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. She mentioned she made a presentation to her leadership on marketing budgets and ROI, and asked if I wanted to see it. So we sat down after lunch to go through the presentation. I was so impressed that I invited Caitlyn to teach on the pre-conference day for the 2024 Ariat Dirt World Summit. We’re finalizing details but I hope to add that session soon. Caitlyn has one of the largest and most active marketing departments in the Dirt World. She has 16 full-time employees, but also leverages outside agencies like BuildWitt and Platinum XP to augment her team. Her marketing budget is roughly .25% to .5% of total company revenue, although she’s had to build that over time. Her team is organized to pursue private work, tell stories, engage/retain their employee-owners, run events, and attract people for hiring. And they’ve had record stock growth for their ESOP. There are many factors for that growth, but great marketing doesn’t hurt.   So I’m sticking with my 0.5% target. For context, a typical software company spends 6 to 8% of revenue on marketing. Construction won’t get there anytime soon, but one could argue that even .5% is too low for telling our story. For a $100M revenue company, .5% of revenue is a budget of $500k annually for marketing. Finding good examples in marketing and comms in Iceland is, well, challenging, as everything tends to be in silos even in such a small society. So it’s good that we now have HERFERÐ, a news site dedicated to the Icelandic marketing and communications community (the name translates as 'campaign' from the Icelandic). It's not just a site – it's a safe space where marketers can discuss their trade, campaigns, and ideas, according to its co-founder Anna Margrét Gunnarsdóttir. It's wild to think that this didn’t exist only a few months ago. The more we share, the more we learn, and the more professional the community becomes. Here's what Anna told me about why she launched Herferð: 💫 "My co-founder Erna Hreinsdóttir and I have lived and worked abroad for the last decade or so. Both of us had gotten used to reading, engaging with and even working with these types of trade platforms, but we felt this was missing in Iceland. Generally it has been difficult for agenciesto get media coverage about their campaigns or other marketing focused initiatives as they are often deemed too niche or too commercial by general media- which is understandable, these are after all commercial topics. 💫 We saw an opportunity here in that we could support the community by providing this kind of a platform, a "safe space" to talk all things marketing and communications. 💫 Both of us have extensive experience in marketing, PR and communications - we even used to work together at the now defunct fashion magazine Nýtt Líf. So it was easy for us to jump back into old ways, brainstorming, discussing angles and sourcing interesting stories. Erna is also a talented designer, both graphic and web design, as well as a art director - so we pretty much had everything on hand to get Herferð ready for launch. 💫 Herferð provides Erna and I with a valuable opportunity to connect with the local marketing industry and pursue collaborations and projects in Iceland - even though we both still reside abroad, Erna being in Barcelona while I'm in Stockholm. Its fun and quite fulfilling to hear about everything that's happening locally - Iceland is of course small but it's full of talented, passionate people and everyday we learn about something new and exciting.
