New post is up. The online scam industry has a strong base in Southeast Asia, but in recent years it has gone truly global. Nationals from all over the world travel to Southeast Asia to work in the sector. Some come willingly and in the knowledge the work is illegal; many others are duped with false job offers. Likewise, people from Southeast Asia have travelled to other parts of the world, where scam centres are popping up with increasing frequency. In this post we look at some of the recent reporting on the industry’s expanding scope. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e7F3TxuW

🚨 Important Notice: Beware of Potential Job Scams 🚨 Dear Professionals, In our quest for career opportunities, it's crucial to remain vigilant and well-informed. Recently, I encountered an opportunity where I had to refer candidates for a call center job (Bitcoin, Crypto online apps, etc.) in Thailand with the (average package) and what I discovered is deeply concerning. I feel it's important to share my findings with you all to ensure our collective awareness and safety. Misrepresentation of Location: Initially they say that the job location is in Thailand, but they take you to places in Laos or Myanmar (via road, and you will cross the border without knowing). Shockingly, these locations are undisclosed "Detention Centers" operated by undisclosed entities. Locked-In Contracts: If you take one of these jobs, they make you sign a contract for a whole year. And if you try to leave early, they charge you a lot of money. Document Seizure and Travel Restrictions: Once you're there, they take your passport and other important stuff so you can't leave. It's like you're stuck. Stay Alert: My advice? Always check out a job before you say yes, especially if it's in another country. Your safety is more important than anything else. Helping Out: If you know someone in this situation or think something's not right, tell the consulate or authorities from their home country. They need help. HR, Take Note: To all my fellow HR folks and recruiters, let's be extra careful about the gigs we're promoting. If something feels shady, it's better to steer clear and protect everyone. Check out the articles linked below for more info. Stay safe, everyone, and share this post for awareness. https://lnkd.in/dyjPSHfi https://lnkd.in/dz7QBmp5 https://lnkd.in/dNF7aHET https://lnkd.in/dXknJ8A6 #JobSafetyAlert #AvoidJobScams #spreadawareness

♦️Secure Talk : Beware of Overseas Job Scams In recent times, there has been a disturbing rise in job scams targeting individuals seeking lucrative opportunities abroad. Countries like Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand have become hotspots for these fraudulent activities. Scammers mostly use social media platforms to advertise high-paying jobs that promise a better life and career growth. These offers can be incredibly tempting, especially for those struggling to find stable employment. However, the reality is far from what is promised. ❗️The Trap Once lured by these attractive offers, victims are often taken to remote locations where their passports and personal documents are confiscated. They are then forced to work in harsh conditions, often in illegal activities such as online scams and cybercrimes. As per published reports, many victims have shared harrowing experiences of being held captive and subjected to physical and emotional abuse. Individuals from various countries, including India, have been trapped in scam compounds in Cambodia and Thailand, forced to work long hours under threat of violence. ❗️How to Protect Yourself Verify Job Offers: Always verify the legitimacy of job offers through official channels. Contact the embassy or consulate of the country where the job is located. Research the Company: Conduct thorough research on the company offering the job. Look for reviews and any red flags. Avoid Upfront Payments: Be wary of job offers that require upfront payments for visas, travel, or other expenses. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on the latest scams and warnings issued by government agencies and trusted organizations. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and informed to protect yourself and your loved ones from falling prey to these scams. Stay safe and always verify before you trust! The principal of “Zero Trust” applies here as well !

Dear Colleagues, I would like to bring to your attention a cautionary incident regarding the payment for psychometric tests in relation to job applications( any organization) particularly in Africa. In 2018, I had an unfortunate experience with an organization called name withheld. I was approached by this organization with an enticing offer to take the OTTP Psychometric tests - costed over 120 USD then, with the promise of a job opportunity as the Country Director for Plan International Nigeria. After taking the tests, I received a score of 95%. However, it soon became apparent that this was a fraudulent scheme, and I was ultimately deceived and defrauded by the organization. I share this experience with you all to emphasize the importance of exercising caution when encountering similar situations. It is crucial to be vigilant and skeptical of job offers that require payment for psychometric tests or any other form of assessment. Not all advertised job opportunities are genuine, and it is essential to thoroughly research and verify the legitimacy of the organizations and individuals involved. Please be guided by this cautionary tale and remain cautious when engaging in job applications and assessments. If something seems too good to be true or raises any suspicions, it is always advisable to seek further information and consult trusted sources. Remember, your security and well-being are of utmost importance, and it is crucial to protect yourself from potential scams and fraudulent activities.

Today, during headhunting, a particular candidate literally called me a scam because I guess maybe it was too good to be true that a Nigerian could have the privilege to recruit for sophisticated tech roles in an international company. This candidate clearly stated that due to the high rate of scams from my home country, Nigeria, it is hard to tell if I am not trying to scam or not. He also requested to talk to the owner of the company (the audacity!). This came as a shock to me. This is LinkedIn, my profile does not look fake, and the name and details of the company are clearly stated in the link sent for the application. So why make all these accusations? It got to me a lot, and I decided not to try to convince the candidate because the more I tried, the more it seemed like I was really trying to persuade him in a scam. This is 2024, and in my opinion, it is easy to spot a scam project. Who do I blame for this stigma that has significantly affected my job in the international space? Do I blame the government or the people in my country? Either way, I am most grateful for continuously breaking new ground. This stigma cannot hold me back. I am an honest Nigerian on her growing career journey, so yes, there will be obstacles at some point, but I will not be discouraged. P.S. I am Nigerian and proud of it.

Some stats Currently our 'client leads' to 'active jobs' ratio is 15:2. Meaning for every 15 leads (someone saying, "Oh actually, I might need someone in ... for...") We get 2 opportunities to close a sale, i.e., matching a client to a local for a job on Localee. This means we have had almost 30 active leads since starting Localee over a month ago, and 4 opportunities to close a sale. In case you don't know, we launched our MVP a few days ago. Check it out, feedback is appreciated! Follow our progress --> Localee.work #hiring #global #recruitment
What if you had access to locals who could give you market insight for your product?
