Changes are coming to Australia’s automotive landscape with the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), effective 1 January 2025. This regulation aims to reduce CO2 emissions by requiring car manufacturers to meet progressively stricter reduction targets, promoting the adoption of fuel-efficient and low or zero-emission vehicles. The SMMT are absolutely right, in terms of decarbonisation, vans and trucks are more important than cars. Problem is, the manufacturing industry look at the issue from their perspective and think grants, incentives and rebates. That's just unsustainable. It's not just the lack of charging infrastructure that is stunting growth; the vehicles are not attractive enough to the operator in terms of cost, weight and range. And when you get towards 26 tonnes, the extra weight in batteries means the payload is entirely uneconomic. Until and unless electric commercial vehicles become inviting to end users, no amount of mandates will make a difference, we still need that joined up plan. #decarbonisation #commercialvehicles #fleetmanagement
