Stocking up on avocados for Thursday's hands-on cooking class with Cone Health because when it comes to avocados they have to be perfectly ripe!
Avocados in the store are often green and hard, but somehow always go bad way too fast so here’s my avocado-picking wisdom: Look for a rich green color, a firm but slight give when gently squeezed. When in doubt remove the stem – if it's green underneath, it's good to go!
If the skin is super smooth, or deep green or even blackish. It’s a solid pass.
SlimCados, like to be one pictured, are also a hard pass. While they are often bigger and have about half the fat of a regular avocado they seem to be less satisfying and have a fibrous and plastic texture.
Plus, fat from avocados is actually quite good for you. The monounsaturated fats, specifically oleic acid, is known to help improve heart health by reducing levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing levels of good cholesterol (HDL). Plus, potassium can help regulate blood pressure, further supporting heart health.
