As an American who loves sports and competition, I really enjoy watching and reading about the Olympics. I also take pride in the fact that the United States is always at or near the top in medals won. As of August 8th, we've secured 95 medals, with the next closest country, China, at 67, and host country France with 51. U.S. dominance! But what does that look like when comparing countries by their population and medals won? The website Medals Per Capita does just that, offering a unique perspective on Olympic success. For the 2024 Summer Olympics, the ultimate winner per capita is the tiny Caribbean nation of Dominica. With a population of just 67,408, they won their first-ever Olympic medal (GOLD!) in track and field. On the other end of the spectrum is India, with a population of 1.4 billion and only three medals this Olympics, translating to one medal per 468 million people. The U.S.? We rank 42nd with one medal per 3.6 million people. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does." Olympic Snippets - Aftermath Transcendence of ‘Marchand-Mania’ Since the beginning of the #Paris 2024 #Olympic Games home favourite #LeonMarchand stunned the crowds with his performance where he won five medals, #gold in all four individual events and a #bronze medal in the men’s 4×100 medley relay. The most remarkable moment came during the 400m individual medley final, where the crowd erupted in cheers for every stroke of his competition as he shattered the world record, leaving a lasting mark in Olympic history. Leon’s achievements didn’t just bring home medals—they galvanized the entire nation of #France. His remarkable performances united the country in pride and celebration, reminding us all of the power of sports to bring people together. #Sports have a unique power to unite people across the world, #transcending borders, #cultures, and differences. #Athletes from different nations come together not just to compete, but to showcase the best of #humanity— such as resilience, determination, and, above all, sportsmanship. Despite a world too often divided by various challenges such as geopolitics, sport politics, egocentrism, narcissism, sports stand as an example of how competition can coexist with friendship and unity. At the end of the day, you need your fellow human to compete, don’t you? And it is in sports that the world plays for a better, more connected world. #Sportsmanship #UnityInSports #GlobalCommunity #Camaraderie

The Paris Olympics brought some of the most fantastic stories in sport's history. My favourite was during the high jump final between U.S's Shelby McEwen and New Zealand's Hamish Kerr. Both Shelby and Hamish failed to clear a distance of 2.38 metres - the distance that, if they made it, would've won the winner the Gold medal. With no clear winner, they were left with two options: 1) Both of them share the gold medal 2) Continue the competition until they get the winner The first one actually happened already in the Tokyo Olympics, with Qatar's Mutaz Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi sharing the gold medal. But Shelby and Hamish, chose the second option. Shelby lost his chance at the medal, and was heavily trolled for his decision (Had he won, he would've been the hero for everyone), but he did not regret this at all. Why? Because according to him, his decision allowed him to create history in his own way. He didn’t want to follow in someone else’s footsteps; he wanted to carve out his own path. In a world that often rewards conformity, Shelby's choice is a powerful reminder that sometimes, victory lies in staying true to yourself and your values, even if it means taking the road less travelled. His story is not just about winning or losing; it's about the courage to make your own decisions, to write your own story, and to create your own legacy. What would you have chosen? To share the glory or to fight for your own? #olympics #sports #inspiration

Paris 2024 - the Olympics of records. The records we are talking about are not the athletic ones but those related to the opening ceremony and general organisation. Let's see them: - the first olympic ceremony succeding in insulting over a billion christians with a show that had nothing to do with sports; - the first olympic ceremony keeping hundreds of foreign heads of state under the rain for hours (while the French government members where duly sheltered under a roofing); - the first olympic ceemony where the athletes were not the most important component of the parade and were not quite visible by the audience; - the first olympic ceremony where the name of a country has been mistaken with the name of its long-term enemy; - the open-water swimming races in the dirtiest water ever; - the most axphyxiating security controls ever seen at olympic games, - the first olympic games of the last several decades where the athletes are deprived of air conditioning and the outside temperature can reach over 30°C. Maybe I'm forgetting some more records, but those mentioned are astounding enough. Let's hope in some athletic records too!

Paris Olympics, by far the best for India The ongoing Paris Olympics is by far one of the best in terms of medals in different categories and their number. India has significantly improved its position compared to the previous period, around a decade and back, when hockey used to be the only hope, and we ended up with zero medals. This increase in medals improves the country's reputation and athletes' morale. The current generation of athletes has come to international terms, and they are also receiving the best support in terms of training and rewards. This motivates the upcoming athletes to do further better. The current change in culture is likely to result in more gold medals in the future Olympics than at the current level. All the best to the Indian contingent of athletes who have done so well in the Paris Olympics. #ParisOlympics #Olympics

"Punching above our weight" - Pardon the pun following Kelly Harrington's boxing Gold medal, but that should be #Ireland's official motto, because it's true. What an achievement for a small country of just 5m people to not only win 4 gold medals so far at the Olympics, but also to have the highest productivity, the highest standards of education, of food production, and the nicest people in the world. I am inspired by this country's (and my team's) human resources and resourcefulness, and this ability to do it with a smile. In many ways, the Herdwatch journey would not have been the same anywhere else, or maybe even possible, because our business motto could also be "Punching above our weight" - We have always tried to do the right thing with limited resources, for farmers and ranchers, for our amazing team, for our communities, and we have built a fast-growing international business, a beacon of Irish #Agtech supported by fantastic Irish structures such as FRS Co-Op, Local Enterprise Offices in #Tipperary, AgTech Ireland, Renatus and of course Enterprise Ireland who have stood by us for many years in our international journey. Finally, none of this would have happened without Ireland's membership of the European Union - for all its failings (and it has many), the EU has brought people closer and given me and millions of others opportunities that did not exist just 30 or 40 years ago. (For those who don't know, I came to Ireland on an EU-funded ERASMUS student programme for a year, and never went back...and wasn't thrown out!) If it wasn't clear already, I am extremely grateful to have been "adopted" by the people of Ireland and #Roscrea. I will always be a proud French man, and love both nations (I have dual nationality), but Ireland has given me so much, including my wonderful wife Antoinette and daughter Amélie, and I will continue to do my best to give back. Maith thú agus go raibh maith agat Éire 🙏👏💚🇮🇪 PS: Ireland is officially 12th on the Olympics medals table (which is amazing) but actually 3rd on the "Gold medals per capita" table!! I think that table should be used officially alongside the other one - China are pretty much last on that one and the USA are 29th! "Olympics Glory in Proportion" as the website says 👇

At the #Paris2024 Olympics, the US led with 126 medals in total, followed by China with 91. Yet, when assessing Olympic success through the metric of 'medals per capita', these giants are nowhere near the top! 🤯 Take a look: #Olympics

Australia's olympic performance has always done us proud. For a country with a population of just 26 million, to send 460 athletes, and rank in the top 10 for medals per capita globally is outstanding! For the years of dedication to training, just how much do olympic medal winners actually receive in Australia, and how does this compare across the globe. #Olympics #Australia #AustralianExpats #ProudAustralian #Olympics2024 Joel Kerin William Cant Saad Ullah Ghumman
