The African power sector is undergoing significant transformations, with notable developments in Nigeria and South Africa, as outlined in this report by Andersen in South Africa and Andersen in Nigeria. Nigeria's Electricity Act of 2023 introduces key reforms, such as power decentralisation and increased renewable energy investment. South Africa, through its Just Energy Transition Partnership, is expanding renewable capacity and gradually shifting away from coal reliance. Both countries showcase substantial investment opportunities in clean energy and infrastructure, underscoring Africa’s commitment to a sustainable energy future. #AfricaEnergy #RenewableEnergy #NigeriaPower #SouthAfricaPower #EnergyTransition #SustainableDevelopment #AndersenGlobal

Despite abundant green, renewable and eco-friendly energy resources in Nigeria, the current on-grid energy in the country is predominantly thermal and represents 70% of Nigeria’s on-grid electric energy. In the face of a global trend shifting towards the promotion of renewable energy, the green energy resources in Nigeria are very much underexploited. The key question is whether Nigeria’s existing legal framework on electricity is sufficient to advance green electricity practices in the country. In this article, our Associates, Abdurrahman Nasir Salis, Lilian Ezekwu and Sulaimon A. Badmus discuss the significance of renewable energy, barriers to its utilisation in Nigeria, and advocate affirmative legal measures to facilitate its integration into the nation's power sector. Technical briefing Lower House | Foreign trade and development cooperation Last week, Mr. Abel Neering, program coordinator at RVO for combi-tracks, highlighted the combi-track off-grid solar energy in Nigeria. The impact cluster RenewableTechNigeria, is a key part of this combined approach. The challenge: In Nigeria, 60% of the population has access to an unreliable energy grid, while rural areas often have no access to electricity at all. This leads to the widespread use of expensive and polluting diesel generators. The country is looking hard for sustainable solutions. The solution: The Netherlands has a wealth of knowledge and technological solutions in off-grid solar panels, a.o. applicable in the agricultural sector. RenewableTechNigeria brings together Dutch companies, like Dawsongroup energy solutions, Independent Energy BV and Primstar B.V. and local experts like Commercium Africa Limited, Rubitec Nigeria Limited ,SOSAI Renewable Energies Company and Netherlands Enterprise Agency to work on sustainable energy applications. Why work together? Because we see huge opportunities, combined with major challenges and barriers to entrepreneurship. By joint programming and local customization, we are all stronger and achieve more. 🌱💡 Want to know more about how we make impact together? As Nigeria strives to close its energy gaps, the government has directed numerous efforts toward attracting investments in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE/EE) sectors. These efforts are evident in various stages of Nigeria’s electrification policies and actions. One notable initiative is the Rural Electrification Agency’s (REA) deployment of 103 mini-grids under the Performance Based Grant (PBG) subcomponent of the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). This report highlights laws, policies and regulations that can help harness the opportunities in the Off-Grid markets. This document is essential for understanding the country's evolving energy sector, whether you are a policymaker, researcher, advocate, investor, or stakeholder, as it provides an in-depth look at Nigeria's off-grid energy sector's current state, challenges, and opportunities. ELECTRICITY LAWYER ELECTRIFY CONVERSATIONS SPEAKER'S NOTES: RECOMMENDATIONS AND KEY TAKEAWAYS ON PROMOTING RENEWABLE ENERGY ADOPTION IN COMMUNITIES TO ADVANCE THE ENERGY TRANSITION Funding from local and international investors is crucial for advancing renewable energy adoption in communities. Local investments often focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), facilitating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources through tailored financial products. On the other hand, international investors bring substantial capital, advanced technology, and expertise that are often lacking in developing regions. They are instrumental in scaling up renewable energy projects, particularly in areas where financial resources and technical know-how are limited. Collaborative efforts, such as conferences organized by entities like the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, highlight the importance of matchmaking between stakeholders to secure funding and foster innovation. This synergy is essential for meeting energy demands sustainably and effectively.
