Bim Ofolami, the UK’s Economic Secretary to the Treasury, has just announced the launch of an Open Finance Task Force at #IFGS2024. This move follows the Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology's (CFIT’s) Blueprint report, advocating for such an initiative to bolster SME lending. The task force aims to deliver a comprehensive set of recommendations, focusing on the data and commercial incentives that will propel CFIT’s vision for SME lending forward. In addition, the minister highlighted the necessity of a robust payments landscape to nurture open banking, which will be outlined in the forthcoming National Payments Vision. The UK government is aligning the release of new cryptocurrency legislation with the task force’s timeline. This legislation will bring a variety of crypto activities, including exchanges and customer asset management, under regulatory oversight. Another crypto-friendly bank goes bankrupt. This is sort of a big deal. Swiss regulators just shut down FlowBank. Apparently the bank didn't have the minimum capital requirements to operate. So, who is FlowBank? The bank is only 4 years old. It was the banking partner for Binance. And it offered crypto through a partnership with CoinShares. ...who also owned 9% of the bank. So, is the Swiss regulator trying to cut off crypto from the banking world? Similar to the U.S. operation's chokepoint 2.0. It's unlikely. Switzerland is one of the most crypto friendly jurisdictions. With many projects, exchanges, and other crypto companies calling it home. There are also other crypto-friendly banks in Switzerland.
