𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐬. "As #stupidity is typically #human, one can say that like a Janus bifrons, #homosapiens is also #homostultus, a stupid man, in keeping with Latin taxonomy." “Be warned that if you wish, as I do, to build a society in which individuals #cooperate #generously and #unselfishly towards a #commongood, you can expect little help from #biologicalnature. Let us try to teach #generosity and #altruism, because we are born selfish. Let us understand what our own #selfishgenes are up to, because we may then at least have the chance to upset their designs, something that no other species has ever aspired to” (Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene, Oxford: OUP, 2006, 3). If evolution was originally depicted as a tree, with different #Species branching off as new blooms, then new research published in Nature (Nature Portfolio) shows how the branches may actually be more entangled. Harvard University researchers show that hybrids between species of #Butterflies can produce new species that are genetically distinct from both parent species and their earlier forebears. Genomes of multicellular algal relatives reveal evolutionary clues to plant origins, Berlin, Germany (SPX) May 06, 2024 Land plants, which dominate our planet's landscape, have developed from simple organisms into complex forms with diverse organs and cell types. This transformation, supported by a vast network of genes, facilitates the intricate shaping of plant structures through various molecular processes. This significant evolution began with a singular event-plant terrestrialization-when ancestors of,

Gene flow in giraffes and what it means for their conservation . Giraffes, with their bizarre body plan, have always held a special place in the minds of evolutionary biologists and non-experts alike. In a new study whole-genome sequencing data was used to investigate the evolutionary processes occurring within giraffes. In particular, the authors were interested in establishing whether different populations of giraffes really have been isolated from each other for extended periods of time, which is normally a requirement before new species can arise. #ScienceDailynews #InnovativeResearch #NextGenScience #ExploringFrontiers

5mo"Well, humans have taken the #predatorinstinct to a #higherlevel: they have turned other humans into prey and have been using their cooperation capacities to cannibalize, enslave or destroy other humans. And just because we are rational animals, as Aristotle defined us, we have used reason to create #narratives, social and political #rituals, philosophical and scientific #theories to justify all these types of behaviours. The masterpiece of our prey drive is hijacking other humans’ minds by subtle manipulation tactics in order to control them."
