Now that I quit my 8-5 job what's next? Transitioning to full time freelancing after being employed for almost 3 years has not been easy. I remember I even had a serious flu during the first week 😂. Imagine.. getting used to talk to people every now an then but all over sudden it's only you and your laptop. Wueeh 🥲 Not only that! Time management factor was another issue. Planning my work and meeting deadlines was a struggle as well. It's only 2 clients then but I used to spend a lot of time even scheduling simple videos on Meta Business Suite. I would constantly feel fatigued, overwhelmed and worried whether I made the right decision. But guess what, I did not give up. I had left my 8-5 job to pursue my passion and grow my business. That alone was enough motivation to get out of bed and push harder. I started posting content consistently and got even better at it. Some of my videos went viral within the same month and that's how I got a bunch of clients. Let's get to the juicy part. My income rised compared to what I used to get while on Employment. I want to thank some of the people who constantly motivated me even without them knowing Elvis Warutumo Marcela Antonina K. Mwinzi Daisy Keter Ruttoh Onesmus Networking with this people has positively impacted my life. I no longer get overwhelmed, or struggle managing my time. I think I needed a few weeks to get into track. I'm now a full time Social Media Marketer who is steadily building her brand and pursuing my passion. If you ever get to such a point in life just know that it always gets better . Always choose growth over fear. You are not alone. Before I started freelancing, I was full of doubt of myself. I never know what to do. I’m just roaming around on the internet like a lost sheep. I landed a couple of clients, but still feel lost, senseless, and lonely. I’ve never known someone that I can talk to about this social media thing. I was completely relying on YouTube, and blogs. And that’s it. I had never had a conversation with a real person with the same struggle as I have. Until I spend more time on LinkedIn. I realized that I was not alone. That there are also people like me. Who struggles with impostor syndrome, fear of rejection, and self-doubt. The best part is these people are kinder than I think. You can ask, have a conversation, and sometimes laugh with them. Now, I have a few company of people who I can talk, ask, and laugh with (looking to addmore😁) I think this is the power of LinkedIn that most people don’t take advantage of. So here's a little Secret that's rarely spoken about: The field of marketing, especially Social Media Marketing, can get Exhausting!  NO, we can't always keep up with the Trends! NO, we can't always be on our toes, tracking and understanding the new Instagram algorithm! NO, we can't always be coming up with creative ideas for Topicals! I've been juggling a Full-time Job, Freelancing, and being an Active content creator here on LinkedIn. But guess what? I hit pause. You might be thinking, "But you're never really 'off' as a social media manager," and you'd be partially right.  However, I made a choice to quit my job, scale back on freelancing gigs, and, yes, even let LinkedIn take a backseat. Why? Because sometimes, you need to stop running to truly catch your breath. Here's your mid-week nudge: Work until your Body and, more crucially, your Mind signals a timeout. It's essential to take breaks! I get it, it's a Corporate race and you gotta stay ahead, but how will you if your mind's too heavy to keep up with your pace? Give it a thought! I finally cracked the code to successful Discovery Calls! In 2023, I took the most discovery calls but I also failed miserably in onboarding clients. They liked my work, we had a nice chat, but then either I would get ghosted or they would just say no. I knew there's something that I am missing because the common denominator was me. Cut to yesterday, I had 2 discovery calls and they went incredibly smoothly. Looking back, I could clearly see the mistakes I was making in my approach to calls which I wouldn't repeat again: ✨ Going with the energy of just closing the deal instead of actually navigating if I am the right fit for the business. ✨ Not diving deeper or trying to really know the founder and their brand and talking only about my expertise hence making them feel unseen/unheard and eventually disconnected. ✨ Shying away from giving a game plan and suggesting ideas on the call because I doubted myself which reflected low self confidence. ✨ Last but not the least being genuinely present in the conversation and not planning the whole thing, it just helps you stay yourself and authentically connect with the prospective client. Yesterday I went with an open mind, I genuinely wanted to connect to the person across the screen, their brand story, their struggles, I asked a lot of questions and was in no hurry to close the call or create unnecessary pressure. “I am frustrated, tired, and I just want to give up” This is a message I received from a female friend last night. Turns out she has started making efforts to make money online. Guess what? My friend only started learning a new skill 2 months ago, and now she’s exhausted and bitterly complained that the expected results are not showing. She was expecting me to give some hacks or magic tips, but what I told her shocked her. Now, I will be sharing the same thing here. I started off as a Freelancer selling cheap and trending services. I was not focused on building solid and lasting skills, but instead, I was focused on making money. I was exploring different trending services and building soft skills in different niches. I HAD NO HARD SKILL, I was only jumping around like a balloon on the tail of a rat, lol 😂😂 To be honest, my shortcut strategy worked, but IT’S MY GREATEST REGRET IN MY FREELANCING JOURNEY SO FAR. After a few years, all my soft skills’ demand started to go into extinction. No one needs them anymore. All the untrue strategies are working no more; only true, seasoned, and refined skills are now needed. If you ask me what I would do if I start off as someone new to online money making business and freelancing, IT WOULD BE FOCUSING MY FIRST 2 YEARS ON LEARNING AND BUILDING CAPACITY ON A DEFINED SKILL. I dabbled in my regrets for a while. I wanted to give up. God knows I almost gave up. Then I picked myself up again and started building my skills in social media marketing and management. I bought courses and explored free online resources. I joined communities and participated in seminars. I started making connections with successful social media managers. Then I also discovered the secret in CONTINUOUS LEARNING. I made my friend realize freelancing isn’t a playwork, it’s an investment that requires constant buildups and long-term development. She was glad😎 and she promised to focus solely on skill development for now. If you feel lost on LinkedIn and aren't sure what you really want from it, Let me tell you something. 𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵! When I started on LinkedIn almost six months ago, I wasn't sure what I was going to do here. I had zero idea about LinkedIn, how it works, and what people use it for. I didn't even know about the terms ghostwriting and personal branding. All I had was my passion and love for writing and with that I just hopped on the platform. Here, I found a buzz hyping that you must - know your target audience. - have a properly defined niche. - a fully optimized LinkedIn profile. All that before you start on LinkedIn. That's wrong. It'll only leave you confused. I can say that because I got caught up in the buzz, made some quick decisions and adapted a few things only to meet these unnecessary needs which, I realized later had nothing to do with what I wanted to do or be know for. The truth is you don't need a perfect start. Start with what you already know or have. ➤ Can write, design, or have some other kind of freelancing experience? Start with that. Even if you're just a student or fresh beginner, make a LinkedIn profile and just be here. ➤ Have an unidentified audience? ↳ Be your own case study and start documenting your: →journey. →struggles. →failures. →mistakes. →efforts. →learnings. →evolution. →realizations. →transitions. →transformation. →achievements. Write for yourself. Create yourself. Work on your craft. Make yourself better. Don't listen to whoever tells you any hard and fast rules; None of them had it figured out beforehand. The road to discover yourself, your passion, and your purpose is full of confusion, self doubt, and uncertainty. And you're allowed to take your time, find, and create yourself. How come no one is talking about the hardest part of freelancing on LinkedIn: Finding your voice. When I first started freelancing on LinkedIn, I thought all it took was a polished profile and a few cold emails. Easy, right? Wrong. After months of effort and zero results, I realized I was missing the most critical ingredient: my authentic voice. At first, I didn’t know how to show up. Should I sound formal? Should I mimic the big-name marketers I admired? Should I stick to generic “how-tos”? None of it felt right, and none of it worked. Then, one day, I decided to strip it all back. Instead of trying to sound like everyone else, I started sharing my story:what I’ve learned, the challenges I’ve faced, and the small wins that keep me going. I stopped trying to impress and started connecting. Here’s how I found my voice and built a personal brand that’s uniquely mine: 1️⃣ Authenticity Over Everything I stopped trying to be what I thought clients wanted and focused on being real. My passion for helping brands grow on a budget? That’s my “why.” And it resonated with people more than any polished pitch ever could. 2️⃣ Consistency Creates Trust I committed to showing up regularly, even when it felt like no one was listening. It was the craziest advice I've ever gotten! I took a mentorship program during my initial stage of freelancing. - To get more clients, - To build a community, - To establish myself as an authority, Of course, to earn more money! 💸 My journey started with only Instagram and creating Instagram stories was a part of the strategy! I was instructed to put up an ‘Ask me anything’ story so that I could answer people’s doubts and show my expertise. But after 5 hours of posting, I didn’t receive any responses. I told this to my mentor. What do you think will be her reply? She just asked me to fake it! Yes, she advised me to ask questions by myself and also answer them so that people would recognize me as an authoritative person and might ask me more questions. Though it was against my values, I did that once. I asked 2 questions and answered them. But still didn’t get any response. The fault is not with the audience, it’s in the strategy. When I’m in the budding stage(not so established), who will ask me their queries? People will also be least interested to know about me. Then, we understood it was the wrong strategy or I can say, it’s the one that didn’t work for me. Later I realized, that not all strategies will work for everyone! Each has a different goal and a unique set of audience. Their preferences might differ too. It’s important to figure out what works for you to make that as your strategy! So how can you achieve that? EXPERIMENTATION! Try out different content formats when you’re starting on #Linkedin. Track the progress using an Excel sheet. Within 2-3 months, you’ll identify your strategy and you can customize it for you! So, if you’re a Founder or a Coach, trying to build your #personalbrand, DM me! I almost quit LinkedIn! Yes, about a month ago, after consistently posting for 3 weeks, I decided to quit LinkedIn as a creator. Because why do I need to have a personal brand anyway? What can I do if I earn a little more money with freelancing? But the most important question is I don't even know whether I want to get a corporate job or continue freelancing? Would someone hire me if they read my LinkedIn posts? Am I just another cringy and dumb content creator who doesn't know anything? I don't know the answer to any of these questions. But what stops me from quitting LinkedIn as a creator are the people I met here. Like Divyaba Zala, Ishveen Kaur, Anya Rao, Ishpreet Kakkar, Maansi Sharma and so many more. They inspire me everyday. I started LinkedIn to get some warm freelance leads, but on the way I got so much more! Every other day in college, a random person would find me and tell me that they appreciate my posts and out just makes my day. (Thanks Vaishnavi Gupta and Khyati Verma.) It's not just content creation, but the community that attracts me. Which means, I'm back again. Back and better (well, at least trying to be) and that is what matters the most to me.
