Battery costs still constitute close to 40% of total EV costs across the industry, a significant factor in EV manufacturing. While current practices involve shipping batteries to recycling plants once removed from a vehicle, the evolving landscape, including new battery chemistries, and changing regulations, suggests a potential shift. Investors are now allocating capital toward both recycling and emerging second-life opportunities. Second-life batteries (SLBs) find applications in stationary systems, combined with renewable energy sources, grid support, and behind-the-meter-electricity storage for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. #Germany The total capacity of household BESS now has reached about 6 GW, roughly equal to the capacity of Germany’s pumped hydroge storage installations.👍 Germany aims to cover 80% of power demand with renewable sources by 2030.🎉 However, BVES head Urban Windelen said that the sector isn’t reaching its maximum potential due to the shaky political framework. “Political and regulatory uncertainty remain the biggest hurdles for the industry,” he said. With a turnover of over 15.7 billion euros, and a 46 per cent growth increase in comparison to 2022, the energy storage sector’s expansion in Germany continues at a fast pace, according to industry data released by the German Association of Energy Storage Systems (BVES). A trend towards greater self-sufficiency, higher energy prices, and a need for flexibility and supply security are pushing the industry’s growth, the BVES said.
