Barley - the backbone of your favourite brew. This ancient grass has been the brewer's best friend for millennia, and here's why: Barley comes with its own enzymatic toolbox, perfectly suited for beer-making. Its unique aleurone layer breaks down starches into fermentable sugars better than any other grain. Humans have been cultivating barley for beer possibly as long as we've been growing crops and we approve! From two-row to six-row, winter to spring varieties, there are thousands of barley cultivars. Each brings its own unique character to your pint. The malting process – where barley's dormant sugars are awakened – is a craft in itself, setting the stage for the flavours in your glass. Modern genomics are also helping brewers fine-tune barley strains for even better brewing qualities, ensuring your future beers will be better than ever. So next time you raise a glass, let’s give a nod to the not so humble barley plant.

Case Study 👉 Decanter Centrifuges in the Brewing Process – Sponsored by Flottweg When most people in the brewing industry hear the word centrifuge, they immediately think of the usual vertical, high speed, disc stack clarifier type that most breweries use. Traditionally for final clarification or turbidity adjustment (think cloudy beers), these machines operate in a fairly narrow window...But what to do when you want/need to separate a different stream? What if you wanted to recover beer from hop sludge or wort from trub? 🌟 BrauBeviale 2024 – A Hub of Innovation and Opportunity! 🍻💡 Last week, I had an opportunity to attend BrauBeviale for the first time, one of the most significant events in the beverage industry. From the latest trends in brewing technology to insightful discussions with industry leaders, this event showcased the incredible potential of partnerships between tech providers and brewers. 🤝🔧 At Beer-o-Meter, we believe in empowering brewers with innovative solutions to take their craft to the next level. The opportunities we explored during BrauBeviale reaffirm the importance of collaboration between technology and brewing artistry. One of the standout moments was the discussion around our Total Fermentable Sugar (TFS) Test, which many recognized as a transformative tool for managing brewing processes. It’s exciting to see how technology can drive efficiency, improve consistency, and unlock new possibilities for brewers of all sizes. 🍺🔬 🚀 Moving forward, we’re inspired to deepen connections with other tech providers, ingredient suppliers, and brewers to bring innovation directly to the heart of brewing. Events like BrauBeviale remind us of the power of working together to create a better, more sustainable future for the industry. 🌍 #BrauBeviale #BeerInnovation #BrewingTech #Partnerships #CraftBeer #QualityControl #FutureOfBrewing 🍻✨

In this 2-part installment of our Veterans Wisdom Series, we’re thrilled to feature Felton Jones, Chief Roastmaster at Ballard Brands. Felton kindly shared his invaluable insights on the evolving coffee industry with NCA Next Gen, and we are passing his wisdom along to you. Q: What are the most exciting topics around coffee you are paying attention to? A: The desire to be inclusive of the people at origin. For too long, the communication at origin stopped at the exporter. When roasters demand to be connected with the people at farm level, I think it brings a deeper level of purpose to those at farm level, rather than just showing up for a job every day. When farm workers have a connection to roasters, quality will take precedence and ultimately result in longevity of the farm's existence. Q: What’s top of mind for you in such a volatile environment? A: Education. When consumers are educated about the goods they purchase, they become more accepting of things like the volatility of an industry like ours. Q: What is the best coffee advice you’ve ever received? A: In the coffee industry, some things are inevitable, and many things are out of your control. Accepting those two facts will help you to become better in buying practices and roasting. People enter the industry for many different reasons, profitability being at the top. Those of us who are stewards of the industry strive to ensure the industry can sustain itself for generations to come. Thank you, Felton, for these insights! Stay tuned for more from Felton in the next post on the coffee industry’s evolution. #NationalCoffeeAssociation #NCA #NextGen #coffee #VeteranWisdom #CoffeeWisdom #CoffeeEducation #FarmToCup #Trends

"Ploughing Edition (Second Crop) is definitely one to try if you like smoky whiskies. The cask influence gives it a different edge to if it were made using peated malt.
