“A lateral hire is a big deal. There is a definite psychological impact to making a lateral hire. When your firm announces it is bringing on a lateral attorney, that is a win for your law firm. That is a victory. Presumably, the lateral is a good lawyer with good numbers and is the kind of lawyer many firms would like to have. However, your competitors did not land this lateral. As we get firmly into October, here are a couple of things I am seeing in the lateral market: 🦋 Litigation is still hot-AmLaw and boutique. It depends on what you are looking for, but there are jobs for junior and mid-level litigators. There is also a lot of competition for the AmLaw roles. 🦋 Corporate roles, other than financing, are few and far between for the time being. I am hopeful that this changes soon, but we could be looking at Q1 before we see corporate opening up. 🦋 There are opportunities in real estate for more senior associates (think 5+ years). We are working on a few junior roles as well. 🦋 Labor & employment is also pretty hot. We are working on several roles right now! What this means for YOU if you are considering a lateral move? 🐛 It is never to soon the start the process. I am working with several stellar corporate attorneys, and we are bidding our time until there is some movement. 🐛 Most associates want to stay and receive their bonuses. It makes sense. The interview process, especially for AmLaw firms, is lengthy, so a Q1 start is totally doable. 🐛 Working with a recruiter (ME), I will watch the market for you, and identify opportunities as they come in--posted and unposted.
