The construction industry saw a flurry of major contract awards in May, with shed and multi-room specialist Winvic Construction Ltd flying to the top of the contracts league. Among their new wins, Winvic secured a massive 1.2 million sq ft warehouse for Yusen Logistics UK at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton, marking the first significant build at the site. They also clinched a residential project comprising three linked towers of 10, 12, and 14 storeys for 451 flats at Sweet Street in Leeds 👏 Other notable contract successes in May included Sisk's £340 million contract for the new North Stand at Manchester City FC's Etihad Stadium, and Costain's 13-mile stretch of the A1 between Morpeth and Ellingham in Northumberland (although still awaiting the project start date) ⌛ In the capital, Faithdean Plc secured a £130 million contract for Foster & Partners' deep overhaul of the iconic Fenwick department store on New Bond Street, while McAleer & Rushe clinched a £100 million deal for the Citicape House student accommodation scheme in Holborn 📈 Overall, the data compiled by Barbour ABI showed that the total value of awards secured by the 50 most successful contractors in May was nearly £4.2 billion, representing 150 projects – similar to the strong figures in April 💪 This wave of significant contract wins across the UK highlights the resilience and growth potential of the construction industry, despite challenging economic conditions. 🚀 Exciting Project Completion at East Sussex County Council! 📦 Thrilled to share the success story of our OMA Europe member Pickfords who recently managed the Records Relocation project with the East Sussex County Council. 🌐 📚 Background: Pickfords' team collaborated with East Sussex County Council's Records Management Service to relocate their records store from Hailsham to a new facility in Eastbourne. With responsibility for preserving regional records, the move involved transferring 50,000 archive boxes in sequential order while maintaining collection integrity. 🔄 Solution: After an extensive survey, Pickfords developed a detailed relocation plan to ensure safe working practices. Pickfords palletized the first 5,000 books, freeing up the existing mobile racking unit, and relocated the remaining boxes over 10 working days. Despite challenges, such as delayed building works and incorrectly pitched shelves, the team's proactive approach and effective liaison with other contractors ensured a smooth operation. 🏅 Challenges & Solutions: - Project Delays: Pickfords adjusted start dates to accommodate building delays. - Shelving Issues: Incorrectly pitched shelves and smaller sizes were swiftly addressed, maintaining project momentum. - Health & Safety: Adhering to site rules, Pickfords' team prioritized health and safety, including COVID-19 regulations, alarms, fire precautions, and entry/exit points. 👏 Achievements: Pickfords completed the project on time, even overcoming re-shelving delays, and finished under budget, saving costs on unused cages. 27 YEARS AGO TODAY STOREBÆLT BRIDGE WAS OPENED FOR RAIL. 1st June 1997, an incredible feat of engineering that paved the way for the full inauguration of the Storebælt railway connection. The construction of the Storebælt link, a remarkable project that spanned from 1988 to 1998, stands as a testament to Denmark’s determination and dedication. The highway over Storebælt followed closely, opening on 14th June 1998, transforming transportation and connectivity in the region. This fixed link has not only facilitated seamless travel between the islands of Sjælland and Fyn but also significantly boosted the Danish economy. This new parking lot spans over 4 acres of asphalt, providing space for approximately 400 cars and room for product staging. It also features separate lanes for truck and automobile traffic, ensuring safety and efficiency. Designed with the future in mind, this project was completed while safeguarding the long-term campus development plan and keeping current operations running smoothly.
