Fellow white women (if you are triggered, you may want to keep reading):
I attended a three-part workshop by Erin Corine Johnson last week, and this is the follow-on. ⬇️ Early-bird registration is now.
If last week's series was any evidence, this workshop will provide a space for honest discussion about what we, as white women, can do to move ourselves along on our journey toward accompliceship, wherever we are starting from.
I am doing this for a couple of reasons:
I am raising a white daughter outside of the US and in a very white area. I need to keep doing this work so she can grow up more aware than I did. The context in the US is specific to our history, yes. But if we are being honest, there are strong parallels with Western Europe and lessons that apply. I want to keep learning those lessons.
Living abroad long-term (it's been 25+ years for me, first Turkey, then France) as an American is a strange experience. As a "liberal", it can be tempting to believe what's happening in the US doesn't concern me and that I'm not responsible for it. And yet, "I" am. A majority of "nice white ladies" of my generation (X) voted the way they voted. I have read enough to understand the reasons. Just observing and understanding is not enough. I want to do something about it.
I am growing my business. And this will soon mean more people. Contractors, suppliers, customers, employees...Values alignment is important, but there are systemic injustices I need to be more aware of when deciding where to spend my time and money. I always just assumed my business was too small to do much. In every decision we make going forward, even if it costs a little more or takes more time, we need to make sure our resources are going where they can make the most impact. I believe this workshop will help with that.

Summer is here, and for many of us, that means heading to the water to cool off and have fun. Whether you’re planning to splash around in a pool, paddle across a lake, ride the waves at the ocean, or enjoy the thrills of a water park, it’s important to consider the safety of your eyes. Before you dive into your next aquatic adventure, take a moment to learn about protecting your vision during water activities.

We weren’t in the right place at the right time. 😔 But there was a small, slippery, silver lining...
Last week, I tried my luck at dolphin watching in Spain. Unfortunately, about an hour in, we realised it probably wasn’t going to happen.
Another family on the boat grew frustrated and aired their issues to the captain. The captain calmly explained, “I’m sorry, this isn’t an aquarium. Yesterday, we swam with hundreds of dolphins on this route. Today, the conditions are different.”
My guess is, the Captain already knew that morning it was going to be unlikely that we'd get to see any dolphins. Experience and past data give us this knowledge.
BUT, there was no way he'd know for sure. So he still took the boat out.
Success often depends on timing and circumstances. Why wasn’t the event successful? – The right people weren’t there. Why did the email fall flat? – It wasn’t the right time or topic.
Tomorrow, the event might have the right attendees, or the email might resonate perfectly.
While the right conditions can often be identified with data, an element of chance always remains. So try not to berate yourself too much when things don't work out.

So no, I didn’t get to see any dolphins, but I DID swim among some beautiful fish.

Home to herons, pelicans, frigatebirds, and other coastal species, Bird Key is a 37.5 acre private island in Miami and important sanctuary for birds across the country. 🦜
And it’s now up for sale and at risk for development. Why is this a problem?
👉🏾 It’s a rest stop on the Atlantic Flyway, a route for migrating birds that follows the Atlantic coasts of Canada and the US, stretching from Greenland to South America and the Caribbean—over 3,000 miles! Bird Key provides a safe place for birds to rest on their journey 💤 As the only undeveloped and natural island in North Biscayne Bay, it’s also free of predators like raccoons.
👉🏾 Human impact like boating 🚤 and visitors have already taken a toll on the island’s ecosystem. Fewer birds are nesting here, and any more disruption to the ecosystem may collapse it.
What can you do?
💻 Visit Liane Ojito’s page for more information and to donate to her GoFundMe for purchasing the island.
🗣️ Share this information to spread awareness of why we need to help #SaveBirdKey.
🙏🏾 Engage your network to identify contacts or connections who may be able to help.
And lastly, remember when birds migrate in the fall and spring, help them by turning off nonessential outdoor lights at night.
Don’t miss your opportunity, take it while you can.
Reminder from barn swallows.
Fun fact: They eat while they fly and even feed their young in flight.
