On Taught and Learned Found this comic strip as I was doing some #research to update and improve my #TTT course. I am scheduled to do another one next week. In my many years of being in #learningandevelopment, I have seen many wannabe #trainer and seasoned trainer, #bosses, #leaders, #CEOs #heads even amongst #learninganddevelopment practitioners having trouble to differentiate the two. Many believe the two are the same. I hate to say this, they are not the same. My staff and participants are becoming tiresome of me saying, "how do you know they know?". They are more likely to say, "because I have taught them". And I asked them again. They repeat the answer. You can see we are not getting anywhere. So, when I do my TTT, I spend a bit of time on making sure they know this concept, and how to apply it in the #lesson they are #teaching. It takes awhile, but they eventually get it. So, if you are in the midst of rolling out a #program, be very clear, you need to put in place an evaluation into the program to ensure participants get what they are supposed to get in the program, be it the #knowledge, #skills or #behaviors. Unfortunately, many plan this post haste, after the course. This only #evaluate what the course has delivered. You have not ascertained whether that was what is needed for the #participants to improve their #performance at their jobs. Thus, there is this concept on evaluation called, #Validity and #Reliability. Reliability and validity are both about how well a method measures something: Reliability refers to the consistency of a measure (whether the results can be reproduced under the same conditions). Validity refers to the accuracy of a measure (whether the results really do represent what they are supposed to measure). Good luck. How long have you been as a trainer? 3. Which level of your being a trainer? 4. How can you describe yourself as a trainer 5. What accomplished you had been through as a trainer 6. How can you deliver to the people as a good host or speaker that every accomplishment and overall experience you can motivate them without "I ? 7. How do you treat your trainee when asking for help and you know that you are much more knowledgeable than others and slow picked up? Today it's my turn to learn 🧑🎓 Lately, I've had a lot of opportunities to introduce other trainers. And sometimes, I'd stay back to watch and take part in the program. 👀 Today, I was introducing Firdaus to a group of participants who are taking part in my 6 month long Manager's Development Program for Monash University Malaysia. un🎓 I designed the program so that the program is dynamic - covering many aspects relevant to someone stepping into mid level management. 🗓️ Firdaus is taking a portion of the program and today he is delivering a topic on Solution Focused Mind Set. 👍 I've been to his session a few times already. We've even co-delivered a few times too. He is now part of my team, so I see him a lot more than before. But each time I see him in action, I still learn something new. I think that as a trainer, it's important to also keep your mind fresh on new ideas, different types of delivery methods, activity and games. It's fun to watch another trainer, especially an experienced trainer flex their skills and muscles during a session. 😅 From his session I learned to: 💎 Simplify your delivery 💎 Use the whiteboard and description MORE than the slides 💎 Rewards. I thought my rewards are good...but his is MORE attractive 😅 💎 Improved preparation. Firdaus is kinda good at this, cause he flows through the activity smoothly. Smooth like 🧈 So sometimes it's critical to spend time to learn from others, especially your peers if you wish to improve your own performance. I know now that I need to spend some time relearning the skills that's critical for us. However bitter the pill of training your underlings may be, the onus of performance of one's team always rests on the commander's/manager's shoulder. The crowning on victory & persecution on loss is the ultimate reward for the leader. Yes, the training of team should be an integral part of manager's KRA/KPI & should not solely be left for L&D division OR a master trainer.
