"I have said that science is impossible without faith. But this I do not mean that faith on which science depends depends is religion in nature or involves the acceptance of any of the dogmas of the ordinary religious creed, yet without faith that nature is subject to law there can be no science. No amount of demonstration can ever prove that nature is subject to law. For all we know, the world from the next moment on might be something like the croquet game in Alice in Wonderland, where the balls are hedgehogs which walk off, the hoops are soldiers who march to other parts of the field to other parts of the field to other parts of the field, the rules of the game are made from instance to instance by the arbitrary decree of the Queen. It is to a world like this that the scientist must conform in totalitarian countries, no matter whether they be those on the right or of the left. The Marxist Queen is very arbitrary indeed, and the fascist Queen is a good match for her." A white settler on stolen Indigenous land gives a speech on the validity of another violent white supremacist colonizer ideology. If y’all weren’t so naive, it wouldn’t really be that shocking, to be honest. "In a country like Canada, it should be and it must be, safe to declare oneself a Zionist - Jewish or not. Zionism is not a dirty word or something anyone should be targeted for agreeing with.” - @JustinTrudeau Zionism IS a dirty word, but for the leader of “a country like Canada” that is built on the graves of Indigenous children to say this with such clarity and ease makes complete sense. A dirty settler colonial nation built through violent white supremacy will of course support another one. When they say “let me be clear”, we really should appreciate how clear they are being with their racism. Zionism is to Palestine what white supremacy has always been and continues to be for the Indigenous peoples of this land. Put that in your land acknowledgment, @JustinTrudeau.

Denison University history students and History Department Denison University followers--food for thought. Everything in your day is just a little more interesting when you are thinking as a historian. And every decision you make is a little more well-informed if you stop to ask some historical questions. How might understanding the history of the 16th-century Reformation help us #ThinkBetter about the complexities of the Catholic Church excommunicating an archbishop in 2024? What does it mean to challenge the authority of the pope? When has this happened before, and in what contexts? How might seeing this play out in 2024 help us ask new questions about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation? History does not repeat itself. But the kinds of questions that historians ask to help us understand the world around us are timeless. #DUhistory #liberalartsforall #ThinkBetter https://wapo.st/4ckliRX

Voltaire: Voltaire passed away in 1778, which was 11 years before the French Revolution began in 1789. However, his writings and ideas were influential during the Enlightenment and contributed to the intellectual climate that led to the Revolution. Voltaire was a fierce critic of absolute monarchy and the established Catholic Church, advocating for freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state. He might have supported the initial goals of the French Revolution, which sought to abolish the feudal system and establish a constitutional monarchy and equal rights for all men. However, given Voltaire’s emphasis on reason and his criticism of violence and tyranny, it is possible that he would have been critical of the Revolution’s later phases, particularly the Reign of Terror, which was marked by extreme violence and mass executions. Voltaire’s legacy as a defender of civil liberties and a critic of authoritarian power suggests that he would have had complex views on the French Revolution, likely supporting its aims for liberty and equality but opposing the violent means by which they were sometimes pursued.

Hello Makeda, ReFraming our history: Long before there was history there was African history. Black history began long before Genesis and slavery. Slavery is NOT our history. Slavery is an evil interruption of our history. The after effect of this oppression is a hard lesson but should not become an eternal sentence. SACRED NILE presents the photo evidence of our spiritual inheritance and buried sacred history of faith in Africa before Genesis and slavery. SACRED NILE highlights the African influence on ancient faith development along the river Nile. The primacy of African theological thought is verified by the visual evidence found in this book. SACRED NILE is a photo history book that uncovers the African influence on philosophy, spirituality, and religion. This book examines our foundational history and sheds light on the missing and buried links to our glorious imagination. In our miseducation Black people have been taught everybody’s history except their own. SACRED NILE provides fresh air to traumatized souls. Check out, SacredNile.com to learn more and share. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin had a significant and collaborative relationship, especially during the American Revolution. Both were key figures in the founding of the United States and contributed greatly to its independence and early governance. Continental Congress: They worked together in the Continental Congress, particularly in drafting and advocating for the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was the principal author of the document, while Franklin provided crucial edits and support. Diplomatic Missions: Both served as diplomats in France. Franklin was already in France when Jefferson arrived in 1784 to assist with negotiations and strengthen the alliance with France, which was vital for the American Revolutionary cause. Mutual Respect: They held each other in high regard. Jefferson admired Franklin’s scientific achievements and diplomatic skills, while Franklin appreciated Jefferson's intellect and political insight. Philosophical Alignment: Both shared Enlightenment ideals, emphasizing reason, science, and individual rights, which heavily influenced their political beliefs and contributions to the foundation of the United States. Their collaboration and shared vision were instrumental in shaping the nascent United States, both in terms of its independence and its foundational principles.

Michael Lucchese hails "The Wisdom of Our Ancestors: Conservative Humanism and the Western Tradition" by Graham James McAleer and Alexander S. Rosenthal-Pubul as one of the most important books of 2024. He explains their concept of "conservative humanism" and its potential to preserve our society. He says, "The decline or renewal of the West depends on whether a politics of conservative humanism is able to reclaim the wisdom of our ancestors and rejuvenate the religious, familial, and educational-intellectual traditions of our civilization."
