The State of the Global Climate 2023 report shows that records were once again broken, and in some cases smashed, for greenhouse gas levels, surface temperatures, ocean heat and acidification, sea level rise, Antarctic sea ice cover and glacier retreat. Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones caused misery and mayhem, upending everyday life for millions and inflicting many billions of dollars in economic losses. The WMO report confirmed that 2023 was the warmest year on record, with the global average near-surface temperature at 1.45 °Celsius (with a margin of uncertainty of ± 0.12 °C) above the pre-industrial baseline. It was the warmest ten-year period on record.

'Surging Seas in a Warming World' The latest science on present-day impacts and future projections of sea-level rise. The United Nations (UN) has released a report titled Surging Seas in a Warming World that warns that rising sea levels are a threat to lives and livelihoods around the world. The report highlights the following: 1. Sea levels are rising at an unprecedented rate: Since the 20th century, sea levels have risen faster than in any other century in the last 3,000 years. The rate of increase is accelerating. 2. The ocean is absorbing heat: The ocean has absorbed about 90% of the heat generated by rising emissions from human activities. 3. Melting glaciers and ice sheets are contributing to sea level rise: As the ocean warms, the water expands, and melting glaciers and ice sheets add to the volume of the ocean. 4. The impacts of rising sea levels are already being felt: Rising sea levels are affecting coastal communities and low-lying island nations around the world. 5. The impacts will worsen in the future: Up to 410 million people could be at risk from coastal flooding by 2100. The decisions made today will determine the future: The climate actions taken by policymakers in the coming years will determine how devastating the impacts of rising sea levels will be. This rise in temperature is a serious threat to ocean algae, which are crucial for combating climate change. Algae currently remove an impressive 25-35% of global carbon dioxide emissions each year through photosynthesis and carbon sequestration. As temperatures continue to exceed 25-30°C (77-86°F), algal species are facing widespread die-offs. Phytoplankton populations drop above 20-25°C, while many macroalgae, like kelp, suffer heat stress above 25-28°C and die off completely past 30°C. These warming trends suggest that ocean temperatures will become increasingly inhospitable, disrupting the vital carbon sink services provided by these algae. This situation sets up a dangerous cycle: widespread algal die-offs, triggered by rising ocean temperatures, would reduce their ability to absorb atmospheric CO2, leading to further warming of ocean waters. Losing this key carbon removal mechanism could push climate change past a critical point. The World Meteorological Organization finds 2023 to be the hottest in 174 years. In fact, the ten-year average—2014–2023 global temperature at 1.20±0.12°C—is the warmest 10-year period on record.   The writing is on the wall: communities are more vulnerable than ever before. Climate shocks and stresses are undermining resilience and creating new protection risks.   There is a lack of awareness about the depth of problems associated with climate change. Not enough people know what’s happening and what the solutions are. But the science behind it is clear. To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, emissions have to be reduced. The world has to end its reliance on fossil fuels and invest in sources of energy that are clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable, and reliable.
