Last week I attended AESP's #EVDX California Solutions Lab - the day after the 2024 election. As I left Oakland, I found myself thinking about what's likely to change given the result. - The science of climate change? Nope! Reducing emissions is still imperative. - Federal climate policy? Probably, and in ways that aren't yet clear! - The need to do something about it? Also nope! As our industry sees potentially turbulent policy headwinds ahead, I'm encouraged by the exciting things my colleagues and peers are doing to make good-for-climate stuff (TVs, heat pumps, apps to intelligent load-shifting, you name it) affordable, easy to use, and fun. (Or, if you don't care about heating/cooling being "fun," it can also just be something you don't have to think too much about 😎 .) There's so much momentum behind - and growing awareness of - clean energy solutions in the market. These "good-for-climate" things can make the grid run more efficiently; offer resiliency following a power outage; and they're cleaner than existing technologies. And people like them! #electricvehicles represent ~20% of new car sales in the US - which wasn't the case even 4 years ago - and most people who go electric say they won't go back to gas. This makes me feel optimistic. Addressing climate change will continue to be a top priority for many of us, no matter who is in office. Making sure there are clean, affordable, intuitive, and easy-to-use options for all is key to keeping up the momentum. What other clean energy solutions are you optimistic about??

As I sat through Day 1 of this year's American Meteorological Society Washington Forum, I couldn't help but think about an oft-repeated cliche phrase: "deliver data/services at the speed of relevance." Maybe instead of an esoteric term like "relevance" though, we need #artificialintelligence to pace our progress. Sure, there's lots of buzz going around not just the #weather world about #AI (some of it warranted, some of it hyperbolic), but a few things are becoming clearer to me after seeing the accelerated pace of this technology and listening to more of these discussions: 1) Updated policy in many areas is needed for federal agency flexibility to adopt new technologies quicker (e.g. OTAs, etc). 2) Updated talent management practices and policies are needed from HR offices to keep pace with how rapidly AI is evolving. The federal workforce can't retain top-tier talent at a pace remotely close to private industry. 3) Lower the level of risk tolerance to accelerate AI adoption...start with low-risk areas as pilots and scale from there. 4) Partnerships and open-source collaboration are the keys to truly accelerate this movement. 5) Systems integration and thinking...this is the space where Booz Allen Hamilton thrives in bringing together all of these to think holistically about using advanced tech to help our federal partners solve wicked problems. The U.S. electrical grid is one of the most extensive and complex interconnected energy systems in the world, spanning the entire country with over 160,000 miles of high-voltage power lines and thousands of power plants. It is a critical infrastructure network that delivers electricity to millions of homes, businesses, and industries, making it one of the largest and most intricate engineered systems ever built. However, this system is aging and struggles to keep up with the influx of renewable energy projects that can be incorporated into the grid powering homes with renewable energy. The Biden administration invested $371m to speed up interstate transmission permitting yet this is a miniscule investment needed to update the overall transmission infrastructure. I'm sorry, y'all. My favorite coworker to date is Bess. Bess is a change maker at The Mini Mountain Farm Sanctuary. Bess has fundamentally changed how we look at our plates and what aisles we shop at the grocery store. Bess is the reason we started a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal sanctuary on our 25-acre farmstead. But Chris, you used to love Prosciutto. I remember. We shared plates of meat together. And cheese. The cheeses Chris. We're not knocking down the door forcing you to go plant-based, but we are working hard to elevate alternatives to factory farming and animal agriculture. It's better for you. Better for them. Better for the land. Information and experiences can have seismic impacts on what we do every day, and spending time with Bess & Bingo and our over 40 other resident pigs, goats, chickens, rabbits, and cats has brought the realities of how factory farming makes up for the vast majority of shelf space in the store. So, what are we doing? We are focusing on giving the highest-need species of animals in this area a forever home where they are safe from slaughter, abuse, and neglect. Where we live, that means farm animals. So, are you anti-farmer? Farmers grow vegetables and propagate mushrooms. The stuff plant-based people eat. So, no. We are so pro-small-farmer that we're pioneering market garden-scale local agriculture initiatives to (re)introduce perennial food forests, mushroom propagation, and maple sugar production in an area of Upstate New York where family farms are dying fast due to unsustainable business models that relied on subsidies for animal ag and aggressive multi-decade monocropping. Farmers farming food for humans is the best way to reintroduce food into our food systems. Across the country, electrifying transportation can help states meet climate targets, but policymakers must ensure it happens smoothly. In Washington State, policy leaders are using cutting edge tools and analysis to prepare for an electric vehicle (EV) future. The Washington State Transportation Electrification Strategy (TES), a first-of-its-kind policy effort, is designed to ensure that Washington develops an electrified transportation system which is as efficient, equitable, and effective as possible. Development of the TES encompassed several key components, including intensive stakeholder engagement, consumer outreach and research, rigorous quantitative analysis, and ultimately support for the state in developing policy recommendations. While the pace and comprehensiveness of this strategy development overall was novel for a statewide planning effort of this scale, the analytical approach taken to support the TES was particularly innovative. #Electrification #ElectrificationStrategy #ElectrifiedTransportSystem #EV #EVChargingInfrastructure

Amazing panel with incredible discussions! Last week, The Institute for Science & Policy hosted another Climate Interventions discussion, focusing on how Colorado is working to achieve its climate goals and reach net zero emissions by 2050. CDR or CCS? Why is carbon removal crucial nowadays? Simple questions with straightforward answers, yet challenging to implement! Despite having ample renewable energy resources, Colorado is on its way to reaching its target. However, the specialists in the panel discussed that the progress isn't happening at the necessary speed and that there are not efficient incentive policies in place. It's not just about creating new regulations, but also about understanding what kind of incentives industries need. This got me thinking: what can we do in other countries that lack such incentives and renewable energy resources? As a Product Manager working on carbon market products in a country that primarily operates within the voluntary market, I see the need to develop business pathways that enhance industrial interest. This, in turn, can drive the creation of effective regulations that foster the growth of the carbon market rather than hinder it. I gained a lot of insights from this discussion. Usually when I talk about weather's impact on agriculture, its about what's happening in the lower atmosphere, not the ionosphere. In May, a powerful solar storm caused the aurora borealis to be visible as far south as Alabama. The storms, although beautiful to witness, presents unique challenges to farmers who need sub inch accuracy guidance in the field.   In drinking water news this week… The EPA proposed a new role that would require most U.S cities to replace lead water pipes within the next decade as a measure to ensure public health and clean water across the board.   So for all my California folks, this could mean up to 65,000 lead pipes needing to be replaced… however this is the lowest rate of all US states and with this proposed change, the NRDC found that with the removal the state could save between $1billion and $5.5 billion over the next 35 years. It is definitely a drastic measure and an interesting discussion of the intersection of policy, healthcare, and water access
