🌍 Business at the Forefront: Why American Companies Matter at COP29 https://lnkd.in/gnu4pQ3v This year’s summit was a critical moment for businesses to lead the charge in tackling climate change. Michael Green, Senior Advisor on Climate & Energy at the American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN), highlights the pivotal role of the private sector: “As American companies increasingly see value in environmental stewardship and resilience, the decisions made at COP29 will resonate across supply chains, financial markets, and competitive landscapes. Strong climate commitments bring stability to economies, open new markets, and stimulate innovation in everything from clean energy technologies to carbon capture.” Why Business Leadership at COP29 Matters: ✅ Influence Global Policy: Advocate for ambitious, science-based climate goals. ✅ Align Supply Chains: Embed sustainability into operations and partnerships. ✅ Unlock New Opportunities: Tap into markets for clean energy and carbon capture innovations. ✅ Champion Equity: Ensure a just, inclusive transition to a low-carbon economy. Business leadership was essential to secure bold outcomes at COP29. Now is the time for companies to align with climate science, drive innovation, and build a sustainable, resilient future. Let’s make #COP29 a turning point for global action and green economic growth. Together, businesses can be a force for positive change. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ASBN Downtown Madison Inc. 🌍 Reflecting on AlterCOP 29 – Green Finance and Investments🌍 Last night, I had a wonderful time attending AlterCOP, where I got to listen to some interesting talks during the Green Finance panels. The speakers shared thought-provoking perspectives on their corporate journey toward a sustainable future, which left me with some powerful takeaways: 1️⃣ The Complexity of the Green Transition: Achieving net-zero emissions is not a straightforward path. As shared by the experts, the transition to a green economy requires incremental changes and, paradoxically, can initially lead to a short-term rise in carbon emissions. It's a reminder that impactful transformation is rarely linear. 2️⃣ Asia's Focus on Adaptation Over Mitigation: While the EU is rapidly advancing its climate action agenda, Asia faces unique challenges that make adaptation a priority. Given the region's vulnerability to climate impacts, adapting infrastructure and systems to withstand these changes is critical. A localized, resilient approach could effectively bridge that gap and accelerate sustainable progress. 2024 hasn't shaped up to what most of us expected but I am optimistic that there is much more to come - especially in the green finance space. Also, it was inspiring to connect with industry veterans and thought leaders like Romit Das , Raymond Ooi and Charlotte Goh. #AlterCOP29 #Sustainability #GreenFinance #NetZero #ClimateAction #Adaptation #SustainabilityJourney #Asia #EU #ClimateChange

#COP29 is not over yet but its results are now in the hands of the negotiators. It’s difficult to write an opinion post trying to stay hopeful and positive—specially after just three hours of sleep—without having a final text, but here are some (as neutral as possible) thoughts: 1️⃣ Is it just me or climate ambition seems to be decreasing? With an EU in war and the US “missing”, the process seems to lack clear leadership. Everyone is now looking at China. 2️⃣ We need to do more efforts to elevate #adaptation to, at least, the same level as #mitigation. The more time we keep mainly focusing on mitigation, the more money we are going to need to spend on adaptation and #lossanddamage. 3️⃣ Reducing emissions is key but I wonder what we are going to eat, drink and breath once we achieve (if) net zero. #Nature NEEDS a seat at the table. 4️⃣ The more COPs I attend, the more I believe in the key role of #subnational governments for implementation. Let’s remember that agreements without implementation are just papers. 5️⃣ WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?!?!?!?!?!?!?? I mean, on the ground, we are everywhere and kicking ass, but for key leadership positions the situation is dramatic. 6️⃣ Beyond #IPCC, #science needs a more coordinated presence to be able to increase our influence. 7️⃣ The role of #youth keeps giving me hope. Ok, I couldn’t be very neutral. Let’s wait until we have a final text (and until I sleep a little) to evaluate the success of Baku. #climatechange #biodiversity #multilateralism #sciencediplomacy #climatediplomacy #breakingsylos

I couldn’t agree more Joseph Ucuzoglu. Even though #EarthMonth2024 is behind us, the importance of what it represents should always be at the forefront of our thoughts and actions. Enjoyed sharing a few key reflections following the outcomes of #COP28 with my colleague and Global Sustainability Leader Jennifer Steinmann. Speed and scale are critical success factors to address the #energytransition.
This #EarthMonth2024 is the perfect time to reflect on the progress made at #COP28 and what we can expect at this year’s #COP29. I’m pleased to share a short conversation I had with my colleague Stanley E. Porter on some of the key takeaways from COP, including the commitments made to global equity and the importance of finance, nature, and the climate-health nexus. While there is global intent to advance a more sustainable future, the speed with which we collectively take action and implement solutions is critical: https://lnkd.in/gsMgQNpZ

While global leaders convene to tackle the climate crisis at #COP29, recent developments in the EU raise concerns about the future of #sustainability legislation. Proposed rollbacks on key regulations like the #CSRD and #CSDDD threaten progress toward corporate accountability and sustainable business practices. Across the #BCorp movement, we’ve seen how transparency and accountability can transform businesses into forces for good, balancing the needs of people, planet, and profit. But businesses can’t do it alone. Robust policy frameworks are essential to align economic growth with the needs of society and the planet. Now is the time for courage. We urge the governments of Europe, and all global leaders gathering at #COP29, to seize this moment to create an economy that is truly for the benefit of people, businesses and our common nature and habitat. 🔗 Dive into our latest blog post, where Carlota de Paula Coelho, Head of Policy, Katie (Katharine) Hill, Co-Chair, and Wojciech Baginski, LL.M. MBA, Board Member of B Lab explain why sustainability policy is essential for a thriving future—and what’s at stake if we don’t act: https://lnkd.in/eQ-Cwvp7
