Georgia Tech and Meta have collaborated on the OpenDAC project to accelerate the development of direct air capture (DAC) technology, which is intended to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide and fight climate change. They've built a massive open-source database of materials and simulation data, allowing researchers to train AI models that quickly predict how well a material will capture CO2, which dramatically speeds up the discovery of new materials essential for efficient DAC systems. Georgia Tech experts in materials chemistry and AI are central to the project. Direct air capture (DAC) has huge potential to combat climate change but it can be costly and require environment specific, localized designs - for example, DAC technology in California would be quite different from the same tech used in London. A collaboration between Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team and Georgia Tech can lead to cheaper DAC technologies that will be easier for companies to implement, no matter where they are. Making AI FAIR. Meta's FAIR team stands for Facebook AI Research. It is a research organization focused on advancing the state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence through fundamental and open research. The team comprises researchers and engineers who work on various AI-related projects, including natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and other areas of AI exploration. Here's a great example of AI and open source allowing access to tools making a solution cheaper and therefore more accessible to projects benefiting our communities. Check out Nick Clegg's post on the collaboration between Georgia Tech and Meta (through its Fundamental AI Research team) in creating a massive open-source database to facilitate the design and implementation of direct air capture technologies for carbon dioxide removal. This project, named OpenDAC, focuses on using AI models to predict the most suitable materials for direct air capture under specific environmental conditions, making the process faster and more efficient. The research has the potential to accelerate the development of negative-emission technologies crucial for addressing historical carbon emissions and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
