Earlier this month, our we found out that The Arts Based School in Winston-Salem was awarded $345K from the EPA's Clean School Bus Program to purchase an electric school bus. This new program is building a nationwide fleet of electric school buses through a ground-breaking investment of $5 billion to replace existing school buses with zero-emission and clean school buses. So, what's all the fuss about and why is the EPA investing so much money in this? We're glad you asked 🚌 🌍 Electric school buses generate zero tailpipe pollution, allowing students drivers, and the community to be less exposed to harmful diesel emissions. Also, the buses will have reduced maintenance cost and a quiet, clean operation. There's even a potential for fleets to partner with local utilities to feed power back into the grid when buses are not in use and electricity demand is high! Parents and community members: Do you want to see an electric school bus at your local school? #winstonsalem #electricschoolbus #cleanschoolbus

California, New York and Illinois are the top three states for total electric school buses, according to new report released today by U.S. PIRG Education Fund and Environment America Research & Policy Center. The three states also lead the nation in combined federal and state investments into electric bus fleets. According to the World Resources Institute, the United States now has 12,000 electric school buses, either in operation or coming soon, in more than 1,500 school districts. Beyond California, New York and Illinois, other top states include Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia and Georgia. A recently published study in the JAMA, school districts replacing the oldest buses had greater improvements in educational standardized test scores than districts not awarded funding. The EPA’s School Bus Rebate Program, which began in 2012, provides funding to replace older diesel-powered school buses with new diesel, alternate fuel, hybrid, or electric school buses. The contention of the study was that students riding older school buses are often exposed to high levels of diesel exhaust as a result of emissions infiltrating the bus through leaky cabins or entering the bus directly through open windows or doors. CREATING A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE: The White House unveiled nearly $900 million in awards to 530 school districts to replace thousands of aging, gas-fueled school buses with new, mainly electric models. The EPA's clean school bus program is part of a broader push by Biden to upgrade public school infrastructure and reduce pollution from old buses. It also delivers on Biden's pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions, funnel federal climate investments to underserved communities and create demand for American-made electric vehicles. "This announcement is not just about clean school buses. It's about the bigger picture. We are improving air quality for our children, reducing greenhouse gas pollution and expanding our nation's leadership in developing the clean vehicles of the future," EPA Administrator Michael Regan said. "With increasing demand for electric school buses, we'll see the development of new good-paying manufacturing jobs and investment in local businesses." When it comes to school bus electrification, proponents rightly point to better air quality and improved health outcomes as the main advantages. Bring it back to basic cost savings, however, and all-electric school transportation is still a winner. 🚍 ⚡ This case study from Accelera by Cummins shows how one small school system in Colorado reduced running costs by more than $5,000 in its first year, thanks to combined savings from lower fuel and maintenance costs. #electricfleets #electricbuses

Transitioning school bus fleets from diesel to electric models carries significant health, environmental, and cost benefits. Yet persistent challenges are impeding electric school bus adoption at scale. Our Generate: Intelligence whitepaper, “Accelerating Electrification of School Bus Fleets” distills research and analysis from experts at Generate to explore how the fleet electrification-as-a-service (#FaaS) model is simplifying and accelerating bus fleet electrification for public schools and the children and families they serve. Discover how this approach can overcome cost, complexity, and uncertainty while prioritizing the well-being of students, families, and communities: https://lnkd.in/gHXhrn6J #SustainableInfrastructure #ElectricSchoolBus
