Architects unveil designs for California High-Speed Rail stations Foster + Partners and Arup have revealed the latest designs for California High-Speed Rail’s first four stations. The team is overseeing the architecture and engineering for the new Central Valley stations, which will serve as models of design for others planned along the entire 500-mile Los Angeles/Anaheim to San Francisco system. The first four California High-Speed Rail stations will be located: in the cities of Merced and Fresno; at Kings Tulare, which is close to the city of Hanford, and at Bakersfield, which will be the southern terminus of California High-Speed Rail’s Central Valley initial segment and is expected to one day provide connections to Los Angeles. California High-Speed Rail is currently under construction in the state’s Central Valley with the goal of having the first operable line complete between 2030-2033. California Rail was first proposed in 2008 as a bullet train service which will one day allow passengers to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in under three hours and take approximately half a million cars off the road annually. However, the project has been beset by delays and spiralling costs. Initial construction efforts are focussing on the medium sized cities in the inland Central Valley with proposals to connect San Francisco and LA pushed into the future. Stefan Behling, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “We are honoured to be part of this once-in-a- generation project that will connect California’s urban fabric with the agricultural heartland, transform local communities, and completely revolutionize the way people travel across the state. We are developing an architectural language for the four Central Valley stations, including soaring canopies that draw in fresh air and shield waiting passengers from harsh sunlight. The station design reflects the sustainable ethos of the wider project.” Ramamurthy Mayavan Philip Varghese #architectural #engineering #agricultural #designs #sustainable #equipment #construction #infrastructure #manufacturing #constructionequipment

NEW RULES FOR CHICAGO LICENSED CONTRACTORS — This is a public service announcement for licensed contractors in Chicago regarding the new rule for inspections from the Department of Buildings. As of August 2nd, if your new construction or renovation permit was issued on or before September 7th, 2023, and you have not yet requested and passed any inspections, the permit is suspended. You must obtain a reinstatement permit, and pay a reinstatement fee, before you can continue. If you passed an initial inspection more than one year ago, and additional inspections are required, your permit is also suspended. If your permit is suspended, you must obtain a reinstatement permit and pay a reinstatement fee before you can continue. If the same permit was issued on or before September 11th, 2022, and you have not yet requested and passed any inspections, the permit is expired and cannot be reinstated. You will need to apply for a new permit to begin or continue the project. These new rules from the Department of Buildings will require a new resubmission of your project and more than likely will add 2-4 months minimum to your project. 🫵 Do YOU have an unpopular Wi-Fi opinion? I'll start with mine: hallway APs are not sin. Do I want to put them in hallways everywhere? No. But I do not subscribe to the hard rule of "never" putting them in hallways. In small spaces, you may choose between adequately covering an area with one AP in a hallway VS two APs in rooms very close to each other. For me, if I'm towards the end of surveying an area, I'd rather save my customer some $$$. No two spaces are the same even if they are both offices. For example, hallways where there are only offices on a single side of the hallway. Two APs may overlap in an awkward way. Inevitably in engineering, people will have strong opinions about best practice. What about you? Is there a best practice you won't hear otherwise on? Share your unpopular Wi-Fi opinion in the comments! Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels.com

Overlooking Union Station and three blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the outdated office building located at 20 Massachusetts Avenue was set to undergo its transformation to become a mixed-use experiential urban destination. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding from scratch, the project team remodeled the complex to save time and resources, resulting in less environmental impact. They expanded the building to 523,000 square feet and increased the height and width. The building, completed in 2023, now includes eco-friendly and advanced technological elements for hotel guests and office users. DPR Construction carried out a detailed design and pre-construction planning using Bentley software, determining that using prefabrication would keep the project on track and reduce disruption to the local Washington, D.C. community. This approach cut two months off the construction timeline, which started in April 2022. By repurposing the existing 20 Mass structure, they eliminated CO2 emissions by 6,905 metric tons. The building’s 50-year history as office space for the federal government is now the past as its visual and experiential relationship to the Massachusetts Avenue corridor and the surrounding neighborhood has been transformed. #construction #engineering #infrastructure #washingtonDC #20Mass

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Wentworth Douglas Hospital | Portsmouth, NH If one could choose a word to describe the primary advantage of #thinbrick #precast #solutions in commercial design, it would be #efficiency. Virtually every new construction project is up against time and weather hurdles, which is exactly where thin brick becomes most efficient. For the Wentworth Douglas Hospital, an accelerated schedule combined with winter in New England meant a product would need to be utilized to overcome these practical challenges. This is precisely how thin brick in precast construction is so effective as architects are able to achieve the look of a beautiful mix materials façade, while providing smart solutions for project engineers and managers. The Cantilevered Portion of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway is truly a marvel of engineering! This unique structure, which stretches over the East River in New York City, showcases the innovative design and construction techniques used to create a roadway that appears to float in mid-air. The cantilevered portion of the BQE is a prime example of how engineers can overcome challenging terrain and space constraints to build essential infrastructure. By extending a section of the roadway out from a solid support structure, engineers were able to create a suspended platform that allows for efficient traffic flow while minimizing the impact on surrounding areas. The cantilevered design of the BQE not only provides a practical solution for navigating through densely populated urban areas but also serves as a striking visual feature of the city skyline. The sight of cars and trucks traversing the elevated roadway with the river below creates a sense of awe and wonder for both residents and visitors alike. In addition to its functional and aesthetic appeal, the cantilevered portion of the BQE serves as a testament to the skill and creativity of the engineers and architects who worked on its construction. The precision required to balance the weight of the roadway and vehicles while maintaining structural integrity is truly impressive. As we admire the Cantilevered Portion of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, let's remember the dedication and expertise that went into its creation. This structure stands as a symbol of human ingenuity and the endless possibilities of engineering. Let's continue to celebrate and appreciate the incredible achievements of engineering, both past and present! 🌉🚗 #engineeringwithcatalin #ingineriecucatalin #BrooklynQueensExpressway #CantileveredPortion #EngineeringMarvels #UrbanInfrastructure #NewYorkCityArchitecture
