Today, most popular Chinese-developed operating systems, including Kylin, Deepin, and Anolis OS, are derived from Linux, due to its open-source nature and lack of dependence on American-owned companies like Microsoft. An opinion piece, and I believe a valuable one at that. Don’t rush to solve today’s problem at the expense of making a strategic error tomorrow. Seek a balance of risk mitigation strategies that makes sense. I think c-UAS - real, militarized c-UAS advanced technologies - is money better spent than over-spending on cheap small drones trying to replicate today’s successes. One is an annoying, likely commercially-solvable problem (hence it’s shiny nature and ubiquitous headlines). The other is the potential decider of tomorrow’s battle and is likely only achievable with DoD’s might behind it starting now. Not shiny, mom and pop shops can’t help much, going to take a minute (has been taking a while) to get right. Likely going to be expensive and difficult to scale down in an effective way that makes financial or logistical sense. But it is vital.

Does our innate "fight or flight" model need revisiting and revising?

Is the military and intelligence community inadvertently using 1984 as a model for conducting dirty operations that skirt constitutional law and reframe unlawful conduct as lawful? Let's examine the new Pentagon narrative that "UFOs are just drones" with the intent to mislead the public. In George Orwell's 1984, truth is manipulated, and reality is controlled by those in power. Sounds familiar? Here's how the parallel can be drawn: Doublespeak: In 1984, language is used to obscure truth, with phrases like "War is Peace" and "Ignorance is Strength." The assertion that UFOs are drones is a form of doublespeak—oversimplifying or mislabeling phenomena to control public perception and steer discourse away from deeper questions. Control of Information: The Party in 1984 controls what people know and believe by altering historical records and controlling access to information. Similarly, the U.S. government has kept information about UFOs hidden from Congress and the public. Shaping Reality: In 1984, the Party dictates reality by asserting its narrative as the only truth, even when it contradicts observable facts. The "drones" explanation serves as a similar tool to create a sanitized version of reality that aligns with the interests of the military and intelligence community. Thought Control: Labeling UFOs as drones subtly encourages the public to adopt a specific framework of thinking: Mysterious drones are mundane, not extraordinary, and not worth deeper scrutiny. This curtails intellectual freedom and independent investigation, echoing 1984's suppression of "thoughtcrime." Do UFOs exist? No, these are drones, also, you're weird if you ask about something that has been intentionally stigmatized for eight decades by the U.S. government. Are we still allowed to ask this question or will our free speech be sequestered again with mysterious internet threats and content manipulation?

In my opinion, it's a must-read for anyone interested in connecting cutting-edge technology with strategic/operational decision-making. It also skillfully examines how technology is reshaping warfare while providing recent examples of how we are winning and learning.
