HELP. I get auto-rejected right after application! 💡 I have attempted to de-mystify the scary Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), but this comes up again and again. ⇒ 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗜 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗖𝗩? No. ATS is a tool that does only what the users set-it up to do. Recruiters who post job openings, often set-up screening questions with multiple choice answers for minimum requirements required to get considered. Should your answers do not demonstrate it, you will receive an auto-reject. 💡 Read these questions carefully. In case of doubt, pick the answer that matches the requirements. ⇒ 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗸𝗲𝘆𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲? Most ATS do not have such function, so most likely it was a real human who screened your application and clicked the button. Yes, this can be done very fast, especially when you apply after hundreds of candidates are already in the pool. 💡 While keywords may help you to get featured higher up the applicant list, they will not get you the job. ⇒ 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻? While this is a possible scenario, it is still not a likely one. Most top companies do not publish a vacancy externally to fill the role internally. This creates unnecessary work for Talent Acquisition teams and damages employer brand. 💡 Internal talent often is prioritized in candidate selection process to foster growth and retention. This is your reminder that the Applicant Tracking System is NOT your enemy. It is not screening you out because you don't have the "right" keywords on your resume. Yes, there are some Applicant Tracking Systems that rank candidates based on resume keywords. But in many cases the company doesn't have that feature turned on. And even when they do, most recruiters report that they hate the feature and ignore it because the rankings are so poor. Instead, every single recruiter that I know says that they look at resumes themselves. Of course, there are cases (e.g., you apply late in the process) where your resume won't get reviewed. But when it gets reviewed, it gets reviewed by a human. So stop worrying about the Applicant Tracking System. Instead focus on the following: ➡️Does my resume show that I meet the qualifications for the position? ➡️Does my resume show that I was good at my job(s)? ➡️Is that information easy to find? That's it, that's all you need to focus on. The Applicant Tracking System? That's just an electronic filing cabinet that stores all of your information.

This is solid advice and matches my experience (I know, n=1 isn't a great sample). Just focus on getting a solid resume for a human to read and understand. If it's not working for you, either refine your resume or your search.

Someone forwarded me this email, and thankfully I was able to warn them it's a scam before they spent their money. If you ever get an email like this, mark it spam and delete it. Now, let’s debunk this myth. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are NOT rejecting you ❌ We’ve all heard it: "The ATS scans your resume and rejects you if you don’t have the right keywords." But let’s get real. That’s not how it works. Yes, applicant tracking systems organize and filter applications. They help recruiters manage the flow of candidates. But the truth is, it’s recruiters—real people—who review, select, and reject candidates. ATS may have prescreening questions that filter out unqualified candidates based on things like minimum years of experience or legal work eligibility, but it’s not rejecting you because you missed a keyword or used the wrong phrasing. What actually happens: Recruiters manually review applications. They look for qualifications, experience, and how well your resume aligns with the role. Yes, certain knockout questions might filter candidates out early, but there’s no mysterious "auto-reject" happening based on keywords alone. So instead of stressing over keywords, focus on crafting a strong resume that clearly showcases your achievements, skills, and value. That’s what recruiters are looking for. Start focusing on what really matters: How well you present yourself to the people making the decisions. Don't believe me? Don't take my word for it.
