My colleague, Holly Nandan, presented at the recent Women In Medicine Summit in Chicago, speaking to attendees about "Taking the Leap to Leadership." "Sometimes, the path is not a straight line," Holly told the group, recounting her own experience starting in healthcare administration only later to find she had a passion for recruiting physicians and physician leaders. "I took a leap into something tangential and paved the way for the next 20 years of my career," she said. Holly shared the following career-focused observations with the women present: 1. Men and women pursue leadership roles differently, but no one individual "checks all the boxes." Women should feel confident in their ability to grow into a role. 2. Build a brand. "What are you passionate about, and what do you want to be known for?" Whatever it is, she said, let others know about it to build your brand and differentiate yourself. 3. Build your network. Talk with others and tell them what you love to work on. Take advantage of speaking opportunities and opportunities to engage with your colleagues through professional organizations, conferences, within your organization, or on social media platforms. These things will get you noticed, she said. 4. In physician leadership, EQ is essential. "At the point that physicians are looking to lead, the clinical skills are already proven. The component that needs to be highlighted is your leadership capabilities." She added: "Candidates who can be vulnerable and talk about how they've learned and grown through different experiences are authentic and relatable." 5. Be enthusiastic! Especially in the interview process, don't present a "take it or leave it" mentality. 6. Get to know search consultants. Even if a role is not right for you, recommend others and offer to help. By helping search consultants you'll stay on their radar. Great advice! #womenleaders #executivecareers #physicianleaders
