AGI: Is It Hype or Hope? AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, is the idea that one day we’ll create a machine that thinks and learns like a human, or even better. Right now, AI is great at specific tasks, like answering questions or driving cars, but AGI would be able to do anything a human can do. But here’s a thought: what if AGI is just a bunch of hype? Some think it’s more about making money than actually building smart machines. ➖Why AGI Might Be All Hype➖ - Big Money: Tech giants like Google and Facebook hype AGI to attract funding. They make it sound like it’s just around the corner, keeping investors excited and their wallets full, even if there’s no proof AGI can actually happen. - Job Security for Researchers: For AI researchers, the AGI buzz means more job opportunities and grants. Even if AGI doesn’t become real, there’s still plenty of cash in pretending it might. - Keeping Us Hooked: Companies use the idea of AGI to make us rely on current AI products, like smart assistants and self-driving cars. They get us excited (or scared) so we keep buying into their tech. - No Proof It Can Happen: There’s no real evidence that machines can think like humans. Since we don’t even fully understand how our brains work, recreating that in a machine seems pretty far-fetched. ➖The Impact of the AGI Hype➖ Even if AGI is just talk, it’s already affecting us: - Job Fears: People worry that AI will take their jobs, creating anxiety about the future. - Talk of Universal Basic Income (UBI): With machines doing more work, discussions about UBI have increased. This is crucial as AI continues to replace jobs. - Education Shifts: There’s pressure to push people into STEM fields, but if AGI never happens, we might miss teaching important human skills like creativity and empathy. - More Power for Tech Giants: The AGI narrative helps big tech companies gain influence and justify things like data collection and surveillance, leading to more control over the economy. ➖What If AGI Doesn’t Happen?➖ If AGI is more fantasy than reality, here’s what we should focus on: - Strengthen Human Skills: We should build on what makes us unique, like creativity and emotional intelligence, rather than worry about being replaced. - Regulate Current AI: Governments need to create rules for today’s AI to ensure it’s used responsibly, without waiting for AGI to show up. - Rethink Work: Instead of fearing job loss, we should explore ideas like a shorter work week or UBI as automation grows. —Bottom Line— AGI might sound cool (or scary), but it could just be hype to keep investors interested. Whether or not it ever happens, the idea of AGI has already shifted how we view jobs, education, and the economy. Instead of getting caught up in the dream, we should aim for a future where AI and humans can work together for real benefits, not just for the rich. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the concept of building machines that can think and learn like humans, or even outperform them. Unlike today's AI, which excels in specific tasks, AGI would have the ability to learn, adapt, and handle any situation just like a human. But is AGI truly achievable, or is it more hype than reality? Some argue that the buzz around AGI is fueled by business interests and profits, rather than actual scientific progress, raising questions about whether AGI is a realistic goal or just a tech fantasy. This makes me wonder, is there something fundamental in the human experience of pain that lies behind unlocking AGI? Does an infant intuitively understand gravity from seeing objects fall, or does it connect the dots after landing on its butt and thinking "Falling sucks. Oh look that falls too and like my butt, it breaks when it hits the ground. 💡 " Do we need to move past traditional loss and reward functions to achieve AGI? Something more akin to true loss and reward? 🤔 https://lnkd.in/gGPE5p8S

Day 6- Today I had a 30-minute meeting with Taylor P. which lasted for 84 minutes. He’s a documentary maker and there is so much interest and synergy that our conversations last for hours. Great material for a #docuseries We had deep conversations about the future of AI and philosophical views on the impact of capital in AI. This time we went deeper into how Austin has changed, how capital influences technology and how wealth discrepancies will be exponentially wider and wilder in the future with AI. Here’s a point I shared with Taylor about why I think there should be a global pause on AGI: Looking ahead to 2030, the picture isn’t necessarily rosy. As you pointed out, change is exponential. We now have capabilities that were previously hindered by computational and data limitations. However, this superpower can also be exploited maliciously in ways that were previously inaccessible to criminals. Half a century ago, a phone call from someone was generally trusted. If the police, your doctor, or your banker called, you would believe it was them. But with the rise of outsourcing and scams, trust in phone calls has eroded. The advent of voice cloning technology has made it even easier to mimic someone’s voice and deceive others. Now, even calls from close family members can’t be trusted, let alone professionals like your banker or doctor. As we enter an era where technology is increasingly accessible, we’re losing certain aspects of our lives, such as trust. For instance, when we built the internet and digital infrastructure, we didn’t foresee the potential misuse of these technologies, such as scams. Now, we’re grappling with issues like voice cloning. As more powerful technologies become accessible, we’re experiencing exponential growth. But we’re not prepared for this. There needs to be a point where we collectively decide how far we want to go. We’ve been sweeping the negative aspects under the rug, but we can’t ignore them forever. So, my point is, that we need to take a pause. I’m not suggesting we halt progress indefinitely, but we need to stop and think. When we’re ready, we can gradually adapt to the AI shock and then invest in AGI. Final note: Hummingbirds.ai is bringing TRUST to the cyberworld by knowing that there is a real human on the other side and he is really who claims to be. P.s. The painting behind Taylor is by one of his friends, an out-of-the-side thinker artist!
